EUROPEAN MARKETS FOR CLIMATE SERVICES

Horizon 2020 project on ‘European Markets for Climate Services’ granted

The department of Science, Technology and Public Policy (STePS) has recently been granted an EU Horizon 2020 project on ‘European Markets for Climate Services’. The EU-MACS consortium will analyse the current weaknesses in the climate services deployment approaches and systems, identify opportunities and potentials, rigorously test market development approaches, and engage a large variety of climate service users and other stakeholders.

Climate services are a rapidly evolving information service product group. Several sections within the current portfolio have existed already for decades, but with the emergence of climate change adaptation (CCA) planning in Europe and elsewhere, a much richer product portfolio and more alternative supply chains are developing. Europe has jointly stepped up its investments in the upstream part of the climate service delivery system, advanced observations systems and ambitious joint modelling activities in the context of COPERNICUS Climate Change Services (C3S). Through obligations regarding national CCA strategies of Member States it has also laid the foundations for a significant market. The actual take-up and use of the vast and expanding information and analysis potential is hitherto still largely limited to highly qualified professional users with significant prior knowledge of climate change and climate policies.

The STePS team receives 194.000 Euros for this research, with the total budget of the project being 1.5 m Euros. Local applicants were Annalisa Pelizza and Peter Stegmaier. The project is coordinated by Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI), with partners in Austria, Belgium, Italy, Germany, and UK. The University of Twente will be the only Dutch partner. Organizations as well as government, reginal and municipal agencies from meteorological, tourism and finance sectors will be actively participating in the study and in the dissemination of its results throughout Europe.
