Code and behavior: how to deal with users Method
Tjerk Timan and Sabrina Sauer (STePS)
In this session, we aim to question how translations in qualitative research are made between user behavior and design decisions. It may be assumed that there is a discrepancy between what people say (in interviews, focus groups), what people do (how they act with a technological artefact) and what their “dreams” are. Qualitative research, such as ethnomethodology (Garfinkel) for example proposes that a researcher should observe and note everyday life so as to map social processes. We want to give examples of alternative ways to investigate technology-in-use.
