Video-based Studies of Interaction

Dr. Dirk vom Lehn (King's College, London)

Over the past 30 years so, a burgeoning body of video-based studies of interaction in workplaces has emerged. This body of research draws on the analytical and methodological framework of ethnomethodology and conversation analysis to examine short fragments of video in order to explicate how people practically organise their actions and how they orient to, use and make sense of material and visual aspects of the environment. This presentation will provide some background to this approach to analysing video-data, explain the purpose of the detailed analysis of video-fragments of interaction, describe some of the practices involved in analysing video-data, and discuss academic and practical implication of the analysis.
