The material side of the internet


The cloud metaphor for the internet seems to suggest that the web is an ethereal substance. This is certainly not the case: there are miles of underground cables stretching from one continent to the other. Huge server parks are humming 24/7 to keep the cloud in the air. If you take a closer look at the material side of the net, what will you encounter? How heavy is the net, what does it smell like, and how much energy does it consume?


Drs. Henk Steenman studied Astrophysics, Mathematics and Theoretical Physics. He is Chief Technical Officer of one of the largest internet exchanges in the world: the Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX).
