Medical decision aids (protocols) are often expert-based, ensuring valid and accurate content that describes how medical professionals should act in a given situation. For example, MRSA hygiene protocols describe how possibly contaminated materials should be disinfected, cleaned or disposed to prevent infections and to increase patient safety. Implementing medical protocols can be difficult, since often there is a mismatch between the expert-based content and structure of the protocol, and the medical practice were the protocols have to be applied. With the development of MRSA-net, a template and methodology for the development of an eDecision aids was created to provide user friendly information and instruction for Healthcare Workers (HCWs). Human Centered Design and the use of information and communication technology ensure a fit between users’ needs and expert information in both a patient and health care worker setting. The implementation of many infection control measures continues to be a problem, that may be resolved applying an approach that takes into account the work practice of medical professionals.
This research is part of the EurSafety Health-net project, a European project that aims to increase patient safety by controlling infections in a cross-border setting. In this assignment, you work in close cooperation with HCWs and hygienists from German hospitals. You investigate together with stakeholders (experts and end users of the protocols) how these protocols can be translated in an eHealth application that better fits the needs of HCWs. To this end, you use the CeHRES-Roadmap and eHealthwiki-toolkit and experiences gained in the previous MRSA-net research. Ultimately, this assignment results in requirements including an information structure proposal for a hygiene protocol application.
1. Development of a prototype (template eDecision Aid) for universal precautions that better fits user-needs than current paper-based protocols, according to the CeHRes-roadmap, using templates from prior project MRSA-net)
2. Validation of the template and method of ‘translating’ expert-driven protocols to a Human-Centered, technology-aided application for hygiene protocol communication, using scenario’s and tools from the eHealthwiki.org toolkit.
Wie zoeken we?
A student that speaks or understand German language; a student that is creative in applying theories (information seeking behavior, persuasive theories and user centered design principles).
Wat bieden we?
The student woks in cooperation with PHT-researchers Eursafety. The student can use the methodology of already developed decision aids and templates. A (afstudeerkring), student masters-community for students that employ the same research methods.
