Title: AMC: Developing an innovative digital training to help train oncologists in effective doctor-patient communication.

Type of assignment: BA

Internal or external?: Internal/external: location UTwente/AMC (combination)

Maximum number of students Yes (1)

Individual collecting of data? No

Type of research: Literature review

Description of the assignment:

The Medical Psychology department of the Academic Medical Centre in Amsterdam is currently conducting a research project on improving the communication between doctors and patients with a focus on information giving skills of oncologists. This project, funded by KWF, is a collaboration between several departments of the AMC and NIVEL.

The main objective of this research is to come up with new and innovative (digital) ways of training oncologists in their information giving skills. We are looking for ‘out-of-the-box’ ideas in order to maximize the learning effect while minimizing the time needed for training, as busy doctors associate a too large time investment with more conventional ways of training.

We would like to offer 1 bachelor student the possibility to conduct a literature (review) study on the current trends and innovations in (healthcare) communication training research in order to help us with this challenging objective.

The results will be presented in a bachelor thesis and will be used in the next phase of this research project in which we develop prototypes of an innovative (digital) training to help oncologists in effective communication with their patients in order to reduce symptom distress and improve patient satisfaction.

Who are we looking for? We are looking for a motivated bachelor student interested in (innovative) communication research in the healthcare domain. Furthermore we are looking for a student willing to occasionally travel to the AMC. The student will be able to work from the UTwente for the majority of the Bachelor research period.

What are we offering? AMC: ‘Flex’ working space and student account if needed + extra supervision
