In October 2008, I completed my Master’s in Psychology at the University of Twente (Safety & Health track). For my masters’ thesis I investigated the relationship among impairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Since April 1, 2009 I am working part-time as a PhD student at the department of Psychology, Health & Technology (PHT).

Research project

The objective of my PhD project is to develop and evaluate a ‘reduction-to-quit smoking’ intervention for patients with COPD. Smoking cessation is very important for these patients as it may prevent further lung damage, reduce the risk of complications and ease some of the symptoms. Unfortunately, due to several failed quit attempts, many smoking COPD patients are convinced that they are unable to quit. It is difficult to motivate these patients to re-enter a smoking cessation intervention. They continue to smoke and are therefore losing valuable time. The new intervention aims to prevent this by helping patients to reduce their smoking behavior and to prepare them to undertake a new quit attempt. The intervention will focus on COPD patients not (yet) motivated to quit, but willing to reduce smoking. Although total abstinence is the ultimate goal, sustained reduction might be a valuable intermediate stage that limits health damage until a serious cessation attempt. The aim of this study is to investigate whether a smoking reduction program, which combines behavioral therapy with nicotine replacement, is more (cost-)effective than a (placebo) single information meeting concerning smoking reduction as a tool to quitting.

Prof. dr. Job van der Palen and Prof. dr. Erwin Seydel will be promotores in this project and dr. Marcel Pieterse will act as assistant promotor.

The project is funded by the Lung Foundation Netherlands (formerly Netherlands Asthma Foundation).
