The department of Psychology of Conflict, Risk, and Safety at the University of Twente in the Netherlands is looking for an

Associate/Assistant Professor of psychology (full-time, tenure-track)

The department of Psychology of Conflict, Risk and Safety has a distinctive and unique profile in the areas of risk perception and risk communication, conflict and crisis management and the antecedents of risky, antisocial and criminal behavior. It currently includes 9 staff members, 7 PhD students, and 2 research associates. The department participates in the Twente Graduate School, and the Institute for Innovation and Governance Studies (IGS) and has its own research center for Conflict, Risk and Safety Perception (iCRiSP). We also participate in the Kurt Lewin Institute, the national research school for social psychology and its applications. The department is particularly strong in its ongoing collaboration with international partners from law enforcement agencies and the military, and nationally with the national public prosecutor’s office, TNO, the Legal Aid Council, various ministries and the WODC, the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority, the National Crisis Center etc. The department is currently expanding with a tenure-track position.

Your profile

We are looking for a candidate:


With a steady track record, preferably in one (or more) of our three main research areas: conflict management, risk psychology, and psychology of crime demonstrated by a substantial number of high quality publications including papers in top ranked international journals. Candidates with expertise in other areas will also be considered, provided that you have a strong interest in focusing your work on (one of) these three research areas.


Who has a strong entrepreneurial orientation. The ideal candidate has a proven ability to attract external research funding. We expect you to apply for external funding (e.g. NWO; Horizon 2020) and to engage in international and interdisciplinary collaboration.


Who is keen on further developing the department’s profile in terms of the UT motto High Tech Human Touch. Therefore, you have either focused on technology in your past research or you have a demonstrable interest in doing so for your future work. We are particularly interested in candidates who are able to use technology to gather and/or analyze data in the safety domain (e.g., sensors, software, serious gaming) or who use technology as an intervention or communication method.


Who has experience in teaching at a university level. You have demonstrable didactic skills in teaching and good teaching evaluations. We are currently in the process of redesigning our Bachelor and Master program for our own Conflict, Risk and Safety track which allows you to closely link your teaching to your own research expertise.


You will be appointed as Associate or Assistant Professor, depending on past performance and experience. A tenure track enables you to direct your own career based on fixed performance agreements, in relation to which promotion from UD (Assistant Professor) to UHD (Associate Professor) and subsequently to full Professor is possible. A definitive assessment will take place no later than five years after commencement of the employment, following which employment for an indefinite period and promotion to Associate or full Professor may be agreed upon. Salary is competitive. The preferred starting date is August, 1, 2014 (negotiable). The University of Twente has excellent terms of employment.
