Gamification, Social and Web-scraping Apps Winning Solutions at 3rd University of Twente Supply Chain Hackathon

The Design Lab of the University of Twente was the vibrant décor of the third Supply Chain Hackathon. After prof. Jos van Hillegersberg of the University of Twente had kicked-off the event over a healthy breakfast, five companies presented their supply chain challenges to the teams.

Kadaster presented their open geo-data services and hoped for a surprising application of this data in the logistics domain. Cofano explained the container stacking challenge to be supported by their terminal operations software. They’d love to see a solution to improve current stacking practices. Kuehne and Nagel explained their highly automated warehouse sorting process and what challenges remain to make it even more effective. CapeGroep showed barriers of real time integration as many businesses still lack open API’s. Combi Terminal Twente liked to be surprised by use of external data to make life of workers in a dynamic and growing multi-modal terminal better and more enjoyable.

The teams started brainstorming. Representatives of the companies were often asked for advice. Data sets the companies were analyzed, visualized and integrated to external data. Mockups were built, algorithms designed, code programmed. One time was so engaged in their work they forgot about lunch that was served in the Gallery restaurant. They grabbed a sandwich later.

After a full day of creative teamwork, the five teams presented their solutions to the jury made up of the companies and the Utwente representatives. The jury was impressed with what was achieved in such a short timeframe. After carefully reviewing the awards were given to…

Drive2Impress (Frank Brinkkemper, Floris Smit en Dennis Muller) won the 3D printed map of their favorite area offered by Kadaster for the best use of Geo Data. They built a portal for workers in the logistics sector to show both structured data such as orders and traffic info as well as social data such as twitter feeds based on actual location information.

The PhD team of the Utwente/IEBIS (Sjoerd van der Spoel, Fabian Aulkemeijer, Wouter van Heeswijk and Abhishta) won the air-balloon trip offered by CTT for the most innovative solution. They developed a working gamified process of container stacking. In a Tetris like screen the planner can try various stacking solutions of containers on ships and compare his/her score against the score of a stacking algorithm that was also implemented by the team.

€ 1000,- offered by TKI Dinalog was won by David Lamers, Friso van Dijk and Jeroen Monteban for the overall best solution. They built a dashboard that used various cloud scraping technologies to display real time estimated arrival times of various carriers in and integrated overview. The dashboard is very useful to planners and prevents manual checking of a variety of dashboards.

Thanks to the participating students and companies the 2015 edition of the supply chain hackathon again was a great experience for all!
