The School of Management and Governance strives to a leading position in the field of Business and Social Sciences within the mission of University of Twente. The department for Health Technology and Services Research (HTSR) researches the effectiveness of new medical technology, facilities and forms of care. Research involves specialist medical fields, including acute care, oncology and youth health care. The research group maintains close contacts with various health care institutions, in particular Medisch Spectrum Twente. The challenge

Considering the high and increasing incidence of cancer in the western world, early detection and treatment of cancer is pivotal. In order to fulfil this need better, new imaging technologies are being developed to screen for and diagnose cancer. One promising technique to detect breast cancer is photo acoustic mammography (PAM). PAM uses a combination of light and ultrasound to detect tumours. The clinical gain to expect of such new imaging techniques is however unclear.

Decision-analytic modelling is increasingly advocated for use during the development stage to predict the clinical gain of new technologies. Expert knowledge can be elicited on the relevant parameters of the decision models. In order to support R&D decisions, these models help to identify those technologies that can become cost-effective. Ultimately, this should lead to effective and affordable technology to become available to patients more rapidly.

In this project you will build health economic decision models to predict the clinical gains of PAM in screening and/or diagnosis. To predict the clinical gains and likely acceptation of PAM in the market, you will use expert opinions and clinical data that are becoming available during your project. You will model the expected cost-effectiveness of these techniques, and also include other patient-relevant considerations in the model, such as patient comfort. This project is not only innovative with regard to the quantitative methodology for early modelling, it focuses on a state-of-the-art innovation in oncology as well.

This research position is funded of the High Tech Health Farm initiative of the Province Overijssel. It is carried out primarily at the department HTSR, in collaboration with medical specialists, and technical engineers that develop and clinically test the new imaging technology.

Our offer

We offer a very challenging position in an inspiring multidisciplinary environment. As a researcher you will be appointed in a full-time (38 hours a week) position for a period of two years. At the end we will consider the possibility for a further appointment or PhD project, depending on financial project resources. The salary scale, depending on your experience, extends to a maximum of € 3755 gross per month (on full-time basis), based upon the job profile of Researcher (in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities). Your profile

This research position is open to persons with an interest in decision analysis in health care. You should have strong quantitative modelling skills, and have a Master’s degree, such as in Biomedical Engineering, Technical Medicine, Mathematics, Information Technology or possibly Health Sciences. You have the intellectual curiosity to further develop the methodology to estimate clinical gains of imaging techniques in oncology. Affinity with imaging techniques to detect breast cancer is an advantage.
