Objectives and format

Our objectives for the Summer School are as follows:

·

To bring together the new generation of higher education researchers (Ph.D. students in HE research) in order for them to meet the established scholars in their field and to develop at the same time their own international network

·

To learn about and build on the existing concepts and knowledge on higher education and to develop innovative directions for research relevant to contemporary and future higher education issues and themes.

·

To bridge the gap between the circle of established higher education researchers and the new generation of future scholars in this field.

The Summer School has the following format:

·

During one week, every morning, a distinguished scholar will introduce a topic related to the general theme of the Summer School, with ample time for questions and discussions.

·

Followed in the afternoon by presentations by the Ph.D. students, usually referring to their own Ph.D. work. Students will prepare papers in advance. The papers will be reviewed and discussed by experts and students.

·

Every day’s session will be concluded with some reflective comments made by convenors and experts.

·

Students are invited to organise informal gatherings with other students and/or experts at any time (e.g. lunch meetings).

The evaluation of the 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 Summer Schools confirmed the importance of these objectives and the value of its format, putting students at the center of the learning process. Like in previous years, CHEPS’ own Ph.D. students will play an active role in the organisation of the Summer School.
