Background

Periodically the Vecht river basin overflows, endangering built-up areas. To store water temporarily, the authorities use an area of 400 hectares to control this excess. Farmers, inhabitants, the district waterboard, and other governments were involved in a complex process that involved technical urban planning and damage compensation. These bodies attempted to integrate water retention, agriculture, and nature reservation.

Objectives

The evaluation of this highly innovative project focuses on key lessons that can contribute to the nation-wide policies to control the effects of climate change.
