Twente Water Week

The Twente Water Centre is pleased to announce the first ever Twente Water Week: Joining Forces in Water which will take place between August 30 and September 5th. As part of the Twente Water Centre’s scientific council’s ambitions for this year, they would like to better promote cross-linkages between the researchers in all TWC relevant groups as well as bring more attention to the interesting water-related research that is taking place here at the UT. The TWW is an opportunity to showcase current research, education and talent that is part of the Twente Water Centre. It is envisioned to be an opportunity for both PhD's and staff from all different groups to network and learn about each other's work. This is one step that the TWC sees as being important to enabling and supporting more integrated team work across the UT.

Here are the events that will take place during this week! Note the bonus lecture on Wednesday September 12th on Flood Safety in the Netherlands by Ties Rijcken

You can register for the following events here!

Thursday August 30 – Cooperation through Coupling in “Higher

Holland”

Closed Event, by special registration only

The University of Twente will host a meeting of water professionals in follow up to the recent Hoog en Droog (High and Dry) Conference in Arnhem. In collaboration with the Water Board of Regge and Dinkel, Royal Haskoning SMC and the Water Governance Centre, this workshop will be designed to investigate how to invest properly in new forms of cooperation that address the specific issues associated with the relatively higher elevation lands found in the East and South of the country; drought resilience, increasing water supply, and the improvement of waterways. This workshop is intended for water professionals, however if you have a specific interest in attending, please contact the TWC directly.

Friday August 31 - Kristalbad Tour

Leave from Ravelijn at 14:30 (with your bike!)

The Kristalbad is a newly implemented project by the Water Board of Regge and Dinkel which is located just behind the Ijsbaan Twente. This area now serves as a place for water storage, filtration and eco- purification as well as providing numerous ecological, landscape and recreational values. This unique combination of uses led the Kristalbad to be nominated for a Golden Pyramid award, which recognises inspiring and innovative projects in fields of architecture, urban design, landscape architecture, infrastructure and spatial planning. The Twente Water Centre will organise a guided field trip to this area, to be followed by an informal networking borrel. Participants can gather at the entrance to the Ravelijn Building at 14:30 to travel by bike to the Kristalbad.

Monday September 3 - Symposium: Uniting Water Research

Vrijhof Amphitheatre, 10:30 – 13:00

There are nearly 150 different people at the University of Twente working on water related research and education. These efforts are spread across different departments and faculties and influence water management efforts though as many different points. This seminar is designed to bring the different types of water research occurring at the UT together through a discussion by various experts from different fields. Following an opening talk from Kees Aarts, the seminar begins with a focus on innovation in the water management sector from the perspective of the local Water Board of Regge and Dinkel. This perspective is widened further by a talk from Hetty Klaver, Director of the Deltaprogam on the region of the Ijsselmeer. Following a special presentation by an award winning student from Mexico on his ideas for improving water management, the Symposium will close with a panel discussion on the benefits of and difficulties in uniting water research around these various societal topics at the University of Twente, and what we can do to work towards a more strategic integration of water related research topics and efforts. This will be followed by a networking lunch.

Tuesday September 4 - PhD Poster Session

Ravelijn Atrium, 12:00 – 13:30

Students doing research in the various water related research tracks at the UT are encouraged to submit posters for presentation in the Atrium of the Ravelijn. There will be a small prize for the best poster. Interested participants should deliver their poster to Ada Krooshoop, Ravelijn 3105 before August 29. Posters will be available for viewing during the entire week, and owners are asked to be available on Tuesday September 4th, from 12:00 – 13:30 to discuss with the public. At the end of this session, the prize will be awarded for best poster.

Wednesday September 5 - River Basin Game

Ravelijn Building 2237, 10:30 – 13:00;

The Twente Water Centre invites you to participate in a computer-supported River Basin Game was developed here at the UT. Professor Arjen Hoekstra will be opening up his classroom to interested participants who are interested in trying out and learning about this educational tool which is not only suitable for university students, but it is also fun to play with colleague academics or water professionals. The game nicely illustrates social processes taking place when water in a river basin is a scarce resource. This game will be followed by a lunch, closing the final activity of the 2012 Twente Water Week!

Wednesday September 12 - Public lecture: Flood Safety in the Netherlands ‐ a designer's perspective Ties Rijcken

Ravelijn building, RA 2503, 19:00 – 20:00

Ties Rijcken will explain his views on 'multi layered safety', currently under fierce debate, with examples from the Netherlands and California. Furthermore he will ride the Ultimate Dyke Operator and explain his project SimDelta, an interactive model to improve communication between modellers, engineers, architects, and stakeholders, active in water infrastructure development.
