First TGS Diploma's

Ruud Oldenbeuving, Thomas Denis and Robert van der Meer (from left to right on the photo) have been awarded the education certificate of the Twente Graduate School on Thursday 6th December 2012. They have the distinction of being the very first PhD students to have completed their studies at Twente Graduate School. They received a certificate acknowledging the (at least) 30 EC in graduate education as part of their TGS programme in the PhD phase, designed for outstanding students who aspire a career in scientific research.

Ruud, Thomas and Robert started their PhD in 2009, the year Ronald Plasterk (the former minister of Edcuation, Culture and Science) launched the Twente Graduate School (TGS). The TGS aims to combine excellent Master’s education with PhD studies. They will soon defend their doctoral thesis, illustrating the fact that excellent research can be done in less than the nominal time. We wish them every success in the defence and their career after obtaining their doctorate!

At this moment the TGS contains some 20 graduate programmes, mainly clustered around the UT research institutes. All three students receiving their certificate are engaged in the programme Advanced Optics led by professor Willem Vos, and were supervised by professor Klaus Boller, both of the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology.

The TGS aims to provide students with a stimulating environment to develop both their capacities within their own field and their general academic skills. This enables them to specialize in an area of their choice while broadening their understanding of the social context of technology and research.
