Invitation Twente Graduate School 2-day Introductory and Research Management Workshop
Dear PhD candidate,
During your stay at the University of Twente as a PhD candidate you will be able to profit tremendously from the available experience of others, both in scheduled form and informally. On April 11th and 12th The Twente Graduate School (TGS) offers a 2-day introductory and research management workshop, targeted at all recently started PhD’s. In these two days we hope to convey to you what you can expect from us, and what are the requirements for you as a PhD at UT (topics such as registration, courses, supervision etc.). Please register for this two day workshop as indicated at the bottom of this message. We hope to see you too!
Day 1: Thursday April 11th
After a welcome address by prof. dr. Gerard van der Steenhoven, the dean of TGS, we will introduce the TGS and what it has to offer for you, and how PhD studies are structured at the UT. In a workshop we try to raise awareness, and highlight the pitfalls, of PhD planning. The PhD Network of the University of Twente (P-NUT) will give you their information, the Career Development Centre of the University of Twente will let you know what it has to offer in terms of career development, academic skills and language training. We will end this day with a workshop on the topical subject of scientific integrity by prof. dr. ir. Peter Paul Verbeek.
Day 2: Friday April 12th
In the morning the TGS dean, prof. dr. Gerard van der Steenhoven, will speak about ‘how to organize a (large) scientific project’, and the “Young Academy @ University of Twente” (http://www.utwente.nl/jongeakademie/EN/JA%40UT%20Members/) will host a session on the challenges of kick-starting an academic career. After lunch there will be 2 rounds of parallel workshops where you can familiarize yourself with the 5 so-called ‘broadening courses’ (5 EC each) that TGS offers:
1) ‘Research management’,
2) ‘Ethics of Technology’,
3) ‘Entrepreneurship & Valorization’,
4) ‘Advanced Science Communication’,
5) ‘Methodologies in the Engineering Sciences’.
You will have the opportunity to visit 2 workshops, please let us know which workshops you are interested in upon registration. Each workshop will offer an inspiring content part which is an ‘appetizer’ for the entire 5EC course. Please be aware that the first three courses will actually start in the 4th quartile of 2013 (April – June 2013). So if you are interested in these topics, you will be able to follow the 5 EC course very soon after our workshops. Course number 4 and 5 will be taught again in the academic year 2013-2014.
The exact time and location of all our workshops will be announced after your registration.
This 2-day introductory workshop is free of charge and open for all categories of PhD students (AiO’s, scholarship holders, external PhD’s), and irrespective of your registration/participation in a specific TGS programme. At the end of the second day a TGS certificate (1 EC) will be given to those who attended both days. Please note that participation for TGS students in the beginning of their PhD-phase in principle is mandatory.
Registration: Please send an email to: tgs@utwente.nl Please register before the 1st of April and let us know which 3 workshops you would be interested in following at Friday 12 April (in order of preference please). If you at any time in the past already followed our ‘two day Introductory and Research Management workshop ’ (last edition October), you should not register for this workshop, because the content is largely the same. Kind regards, Cynthia Souren |
