Provide participants with opportunities to revise, practice and improve their speaking and writing skills in an academic context.
Aimed at
This course is for students whose current level of English is approximately CEF B1-B2. After completing English for Academic Purposes I students can:
Speaking

introduce themselves to a group |

express their opinion in discussions |

express agreement and disagreement |

give clear explanations of situations and theories |
· |
make suggestions and give advice at various levels of necessity |
· |
report and evaluate the opinions and ideas of others |
· |
Can communicate with reasonable grammatical control without imposing strain on either speaker or listener. |
Writing
· |
organise and structure their essays and articles |
· |
write cohesive paragraphs by using topic sentences, supporting sentences and concluding sentences |

use signalling words to establish connections between sentences and paragraphs |

write effective introductions and conclusions |

summarise and paraphrase the opinions and ideas of others |

argue a point of view by making use of cautious language and generalisations |
If these learning objectives have been met, students can move on to English for Academic Purposes II.

Organisation
Each lesson includes a variety of topics and learning activities, both teacher directed and student initiated. Homework each week consists of a reading and writing task, and preparation for class discussions.
Admission criteria
Participants are required to complete a brief assessment before being accepted for enrolment in this course. This includes general information, the results of the reading, vocabulary and structures sections of the online Dialang test, and a writing sample.
Study Load
Attendance at every lesson is essential. The course is held over six weeks, with one session per week, each session lasting two and a half hours. Homework is expected to take approximately two to three hours each week. The study load for this course is roughly equivalent to 1 ECTS.
