Regulations for Registration for Exams and Resits

Purpose of these regulations
In the Education and Examination Regulations (EER) are several
exam-related provisions (section 8, subsections 3, 4, 9, 10, 12). The
basis behind these regulations is that you only sit for an exam when you
have thoroughly prepared yourself. In the majority of cases, you will
then pass. In the event of your failing the first time, you are allowed
a resit – again only when you are well prepared. In exceptional cases,
you might still fail the resit. If that happens, then something has
obviously gone wrong and you will have to apply for permission to sit
the exam a third time.

Practical consequences of these provisions As from the second quartile
of the current academic year, the UT will check even more stringently
whether the aforementioned provisions of the EER have been met. The
purpose of this letter is thus to inform you of the practical
consequences of these provisions.

·

If you want to sit an exam, you must register for it (see Osiris for
an explanation of how to register). If you sit the exam without having
registered, the exam will not be marked.

·

If you have registered for an exam but decide you will not sit for it
after all, you can deregister until 24 hours preceding the exam
(how to deregister for the exam is also explained on Osiris).

·

If you have registered for an exam but do not turn up to take it, it
counts as a failed attempt.

·

If you have failed an exam in a subject twice, you must ask the
permission of the examination board  if you want to sit the exam a third
time . The examination board will only grant permission when you have
made a plan that shows an approach that will almost certainly result in
a pass. How to submit such a request differs per faculty and sometimes
per course. Please refer to the website of your course for precise
instructions.

·

If the examination board does not grant you permission to sit the exam
a third time, you will realize that you will be unable to register for
the exam.

This means that there is no point in going to an exam for which you have
not registered!

Beware!
This might be different to the usual practice to date but this will
apply to all BSc courses as from the second quartile of the current
academic year.

To summarize

1.

Prepare yourself well for your exam.

2.

Register in time

3.

The instructions for registering to take an exam (during the
registration period), as well as deregistering (in the event you choose
not to take the exam) are available on OSIRIS.

4.

If you conclude that you are not as well prepared after all, then
deregister. You can do this until 24 hours preceding the exam via Osiris.

5.

Find out in your course what the procedure is for sitting an exam a
third time.

Note
Address the examination board of the course in which you are enrolled,
even when the subject concerned is offered by another department.
We do not include former passes in our calculation. In the EER of your
course it is stipulated whether attempts before 01.09.2010 still count.
Your course’s website will explain how you can register for the exam in
such a situation.

Exam Registration
If you have already taken an exam in a course twice, you will realize
you will be unable to register for the exam. This is due to the
regulations for BSc students. In this case, please visit the website of
your MSc programme to find out what you have to do to register for the
exam.
Please make sure you register for an exam in time, so that you meet the
registration deadline!
