3. Enrolment and tuition fees

Enrolment

In order to participate in the study programmes and to make use of the university’s facilities, you are required to enrol on an annual basis as a student at the university and with the faculty and/or study programme of your choice. You should enrol via the Studielink system: https://app.studielink.nl/.

In principle, there is one single registration date for the Bachelor’s degree programmes (1 September) and two registration dates for the Master’s degree programmes (1 September and 1 February).

For more details, please consult the University of Twente Enrolment Regulations: http://www.utwente.nl/so/studentservices/en/enrolment/enrolment.doc/

The above does not apply to the programmes taught by the ITC Faculty. For these programmes, a single enrolment with the faculty is sufficient.

Student Progress Evaluation

The student Progress Evaluation applies for all Bachelor programmes – except for Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering – as from 1 September 2012. The norm, determined by Executive Board, is set at 45 EC.

Bachelor-before-Master-rule

The Bachelor’s-before-Master’s rule means that the Bachelor’s course is completed before you can start with your Master’s programme.

As from 1 September 2012 this rule applies to all students. Any study plan which involves a mixture of Bachelor’s and Master’s courses will expire by law as of 1 September 2012.

From 1 September 2012, the following points will apply to students without a Bachelor’s degree:

a.

Master’s courses completed before 1 September 2012 can be transferred to the Master’s programme at the student’s request upon completion of the Bachelor’s.

b.

If the Teaching and Examination Regulations of a programme dictate that grades that count towards the final degree may remain valid for more than one year, these can be treated in the same way as Master’s courses completed before 1 September 2012

c.

If a student still wants to or has to take a Master’s course as part of his Bachelor’s examination programme1, this can only be done with the approval of the examination board.

Categories of students

The University adheres to the general principle that all resources and entitlements should ideally be available to all students at the University of Twente. However, there may be sound and valid reasons why this principle cannot be applied in all cases.

A set of regulations may state that the entitlements and resources described are restricted to a certain category (e.g. only to international students or to students who have a performance-related grant) or a general statement can be made to the effect that a certain entitlement does not apply to all resources.

The following types of student enrolment and registration take place at the University of Twente:

1.

Bachelor’s and Master’s students

These are students enrolled at the University of Twente for an accredited Bachelor’s or Master’s degree programme at the University. They are enrolled with the Central Student Administration (CSA).

2.

Participants in courses (contract teaching) and lifelong learning

Course participants are students who take shorter courses at the University of Twente and are registered with the University’s CSA as course participants. These course participants pay the faculty a tuition fee for the course.

This category also includes Bachelor’s or Master’s students who are engaged in lifelong learning and therefore separately enrolled in certain degree programmes or courses), such as the Master’s in Environmental and Energy Management (MEEM) and Risk Management. These students are enrolled as course participants but their tuition fees are collected and retained by the faculties. There are also other forms of education whereby the students enrol with the CSA as course participants, such as the professional Master’s degree programmes at the School of Management and Governance.

Students taking either the Master’s degree programme or a shorter course at the Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) can also be placed in this category. These lifelong-learning students are registered separately by the ITC Faculty’s Student Administration.

3.

Subsidiary subject students

Students registered at the University of Twente who are enrolled at another institution and who, on the basis of a declaration of tuition fees paid at the other institution, are permitted to take one or more courses at the University of Twente free of charge.

4.

Exchange students

Students, usually from abroad, who on the basis of an agreement between the University of Twente and another institution (usually outside of the Netherlands) take courses at the University of Twente. They are registered as such with the University’s CSA and do not pay tuition fees.

For information on taking part in educational activities, sitting exams as part of your programme and the use of university facilities, please consult the University of Twente’s Enrolment Regulations: http://www.utwente.nl/so/studentservices/en/enrolment/enrolment.doc/.

Tuition fees

The tuition fees are published on the Student Services website:

http://www.utwente.nl/so/studentservices/en/money_matters/.

The ITC Faculty has its own separate fees and conditions.

De-enrolment and refunding tuition fees

This section does not apply to the programmes taught at the ITC Faculty.

If you decide to discontinue your studies in the course of the academic year, you can terminate your enrolment prematurely and obtain a refund of part of your tuition fees. Your enrolment will be terminated from the month following your request and for every month of the academic year after the termination you will receive a reimbursement for 1/12th of the tuition fees paid.

Enrolment can only be terminated via Studielink: https://app.studielink.nl/.

No refund of tuition fees will be given if the termination starts from July or August.

See: http://www.utwente.nl/so/studentservices/en/enrolment/enrolment.doc/.

If you wish to end or interrupt your studies at the end of an academic year, all you have to do is not enrol for the following academic year.

If you disagree with decisions taken with regard to enrolment and tuition fees, you can lodge an official objection. See Chapter 7 Complaints Desk. Subsequently, it may also be possible to lodge an appeal with the Higher Education Appeals Tribunal.
