Civil Engineering

Large projects in the field of Civil Engineering get a more complex character nowadays. On the one hand, because of technological innovations, the spectrum of possible technical solutions increases. At the other hand, also the context of these projects is very complex: an urbanized area with a lot and often conflicting constraints from a management or administrative perspective.
Because of the more complex character, the market requires highly qualified Civil Engineering designers with knowledge of various technical and non-technical aspects of conflicting Civil Engineering issues. But above all, employees who know how to work properly in a multidisciplinary design team and dealing with solving complex issues are really needed.

The PDEng programme in Civil Engineering focuses on solving designer issues within the main themes: Water, Transport and Construction. For example: accessibility of urban areas, high quality public transport, flooding problems in low-laying and high populated areas, increasing flooding due to climate change, urban renewal, underground construction, multifunctional land, etc.

Employers of graduates of this PDEng programme are often the organizations were the trainees do their design assignments. The branches of these organizations varies from government to engineers of consultants and contractors. Furthermore, large research institutes can be clients for design orientated issues and therefore an employer of PDEng graduates.

The selection procedure to apply for the PDEng programme in Civil Engineering is strict: only the best MSc graduates will be admitted. Graduates of this programme distinguish themselves from MSc graduates by switching quicker between different levels (zoom in on details and back to the bigger picture of the design), a wider range of skills by being creative and out-of-the-box thinking, better able to see the connection between different disciplines and integrate them into the design.

Certification

On successfully completing the programme, the trainee will receive a certified, and recognized degree. He/she will be entitled to use the academic degree Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng) and will be registered as a Technological Designer in the Dutch register kept by the Royal Institution of Engineers in the Netherlands (KIVINIRIA). The quality of the programmes is assured by an assessment and certification procedure on behalf of the Dutch Certification Committee for Courses to become Technological Designer (CCTO, Nederlandse Certificatie Commissie voor Opleidingen tot Technologisch Ontwerper).
