      <title>UT researcher develops simple journey planner for NS Dutch Railways</title>
      <link>http://www.utwente.nl/organization/stories/journey-planner</link>
      <description>
UT researcher Kien Tjin-Kam-Jet has developed a new journey
planner for NS Dutch Railways that has just one search field. It
has been dubbed Treinplanner.
All you have to do is fill in 'day after tomorrow at 11 o'clock
from Enschede to Utrecht', for example, and the journey planner
will display all departures and connections. The system can be
easily adapted to search through other databases such as booking
sites or online stores.

      <title>Government policy fails to tackle obesity effectively</title>
      <link>http://www.utwente.nl/organization/stories/politiek-gaat-overgewicht-niet-goed-te-lijf</link>
      <description>
Research at the University of Twente carried out by
Sjaak de Gouw, Director of the Hollands Midden Regional Health
Authority, reveals that government policy to prevent obesity is not
working effectively enough. At present, the
government tends towards taking isolated measures which have little
impact in and of themselves. The research shows
that an integrated policy does work in tackling obesity
and that combining measures is a far more successful way of
addressing the problem. Sjaak de Gouw was awarded
his PhD for this research on 19 January at the University of
Twente's Faculty of Behavioural Sciences.

      <link>http://www.utwente.nl/organization/stories/hip-abnormalities-in-babies</link>
      <description>
Early screening of babies for hip abnormalities is essential for
the early diagnosis and possible treatment of the condition. An
effective way to screen infants for hip abnormalities is with the
aid of ultrasound. University of Twente PhD student Marjon Witting
has conducted a comprehensive study of over four thousand infants
and will defend her thesis on Friday, 13 January. Her
recommendations may help policy makers in child health care make
decisions about the possible introduction of a national ultrasound
screening programme for hip abnormalities.

      <description>
A broader focus on health care, centred on the individual,
changes the perspective of care. The capacity to lead a meaningful
life is at least as important as the elimination or reduction of
suffering. This individualized approach may even help to cut health
care expenditure. Consider, for instance, the cost of endless
attempts to lead a life without pain. These were the views
expressed by Ernst Bohlmeijer on the occasion of his inauguration
as Professor of Mental Health Promotion, on Thursday 12 January

researchers at the University of Twente, to make a new type of
sensor which is ultra sensitive to air flows. These synthetic
cricket hairs can now also be tuned very precisely for a certain
range of frequencies: the hairs are 10 times more sensitive in this
range. The researchers of the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology

      <link>http://www.utwente.nl/organization/stories/topochip-analyzes-thousands-of-‘braille-for-cells’-structures-at-lightning-speed</link>
      <description>
The surface structure of a medical implant influences the body's
reaction to it. The physical characteristics of the surface (at
both micro and macro-level) determine the behaviour of cells:
whether they will attach themselves, grow or in the case of stem
cells, develop into the required cell type. The University of
Twente has now developed a chip that can be used to test the impact
of various structures, both simply and on a large scale. The chip,
which is the result of six years' work, makes it possible to
examine the effect of 2,178 different surface structures in one go.
Up until recently, it was standard procedure to study just a few
structures at a time. This means that from now on, analysts will be
able to identify the surface with the best effect on the cells much
more quickly. An article proving that the chip works was published
online on the site of the leading scientific journal PNAS on 26
September.

A remarkable effect never witnessed before has been discovered
in the ring-shaped stains of tiny dissolved particles ('coffee

      <link>http://www.utwente.nl/organization/stories/hoogleraar-daniël-saris-“zorgverzekeraars-remmen-innovatie”</link>
      <description>
Health reforms progress slowly in the Netherlands because health
insurers frequently refuse to reimburse the cost of new medical
treatments. As a result, there is a danger that patients do not
receive the best possible treatment. Plenty of new technologies are
being developed, often even with active support from the
government, but they are not subsequently put into practice. This
is not only a case of knowledge and capital destruction; it also
affects the Netherlands' position as a country of expertise. This
view is expressed by Profession Daniël Saris, professor of
reconstructive medicine, in his lecture at the University of Twente

      <description>
Wikipedia is a major source of information for many people.
However, it is known that Wikipedia articles do not always contain
factually accurate material. Teun Lucassen of the University of
Twente is attempting to find out how much faith people have in the
reliability of Wikipedia articles. One of his recent studies has
shown that even if an article contains serious factual errors, this
does little to dent people's confidence in that article, even when
those involved are experts in the field. In Mr Lucassen's view, the
study shows that people scan such content in a very superficial
way, and that they usually blindly believe what they read
there.

      <link>http://www.utwente.nl/organization/stories/catch-up-camp-–-revision-and-recreation</link>
      <description>
"Oh, you don't understand? Well it's all in the book on page
102." Often, that's how lessons can be at school. With thirty
students in one class, there's little time to deal with individual
students' questions in detail. But at Twente Academy's catch-up
camp, there's plenty of time to do exactly that. "Here you work in
small groups, the supervisor asks you really good questions and you
get lots of personal attention," says Naomi Otten (18) from
Utrecht.

      <description>
The Experimental Centre for Technical Medicine (ECTM) of the
University of Twente was&amp;nbsp;officially opened on 13 April. Part
of the MIRA research institute, the 1,300 m² ECTM centre will
provide teaching to students in the university's Technical Medicine
programme and research facilities for biomedical innovations. The
ECTM will educate a new generation of students and it will also
provide continuing education for doctors and other medical
professionals from hospitals and clinics. The new centre has been
fitted with the most modern equipment such as an ICU for training
purposes and an OR simulator featuring state-of-the-art technology.
There is a high-tech training dummy, for example, that simulates a
real-life patient. Students and researchers will work closely
together at the ECTM on ground-breaking technologies such as
rehabilitation with robotic assistance (LOPES), robotic prostate
operations using flexible needles (MIRIAM) and new research into
epilepsy. In its first year, the ECTM will open its doors to around
3,500 students. This number is expected to increase rapidly in the
years to come.

platforms pass more pleasantly, and even to shorten perceived
waiting times. This is according to the PhD research carried out by
Mark van Hagen, a senior project leader for strategic research of

      <description>
New research from the University of Twente indicates that minors
under the age of 16 who want to buy alcohol are consistently
successful in their purchase attempts. The research shows that
alcoholic beverages can be purchased in a matter of minutes, and
that the transaction is not even significantly more difficult than
buying soft drinks. Also, most young people complete their purchase
in the first store they visit, according to the study. "The various
age-limit enforcement campaigns of recent years have had no effect
whatsoever on youngsters' ability to purchase alcohol."

Saxion, has developed a new, enzyme-based, industrial pre-treatment
process which enables major reductions in the use of water, energy
and chemicals. This innovative production process is not only good
news for the environment, but also very interesting in economic
terms. "If this method were to be applied worldwide, then it would
create a saving of 2.1 billion euros." On 10 March, Bouwhuis is

During the next few years, the University of Twente, with its
'high tech, human touch' profile, will be making even greater
efforts to improve the quality of its teaching and research. One
aspect of this more focused strategy is the renewal of the
curriculum. This is a response by the UT to the plans of the
current government, which has adopted most of the recommendations
from the Veerman Commission. Students currently at the UT or who
will be enrolling for the forthcoming academic year will be able to
complete their programmes without being affected.

second method then estimates how much harvest that given area is

five European countries, signed a research agreement in the field
of web access. Within the agreement they will jointly carry out
research into barriers and opportunities for accessible IT
applications. Since 2003 the European Commission has been calling
on governments of member states to ensure that websites comply with
web access requirements, so that people with a disability, such as
blind people or those with a visual impairment, can also make good
use of online information and services. Research has repeatedly
shown that web access to government and business organizations is
far from optimal.

      <link>http://www.utwente.nl/organization/stories/high-meat-diet-puts-pressure-on-earth’s-freshwater-resources</link>
      <description>
Many times more water is needed for the production of meat and
other animal products, such as eggs and dairy produce, than for the
production of plant products. The University of Twente has for the
first time calculated the exact water footprint of both animal and
plant products per kilo, per calorie and per protein. Among the
results of the calculations are that beef uses up twenty times more
water per calorie than grain or potatoes. In combination with the
growing world population, this is putting pressure on the earth's
freshwater resources: only three percent of all the water on earth
is fresh, and only a small proportion of this is available for
human use.

      <link>http://www.utwente.nl/organization/stories/erc-advanced-grant-for-detlef-lohse</link>
      <description>
Professor Detlef Lohse has been awarded an Advanced Grant by the
European Research Council. The 2.1 million euros will be used to
conduct research into vapour bubbles. Until now, the behaviour of
vapour bubbles in, for example, boiling water has been explored
mainly from an engineering point of view. The aim of this new study
is to examine the physics of cooking. The research will be
conducted at the Mesa+ and Impact research institutes of the
University of Twente.

      <title>Tentative Governance In Emerging Science and Technology</title>
      <link>http://www.utwente.nl/organization/stories/conferentie-igs-2010</link>
      <description>
This conference is organized by the Institute of
Innovation and Governance Studies (IGS) of the University of
Twente. For emerging science and technology (EST)
governance becomes tentative when it is designed as a&amp;nbsp;
dynamic&amp;nbsp; process to manage
interdependencies and contingencies. Tentative governance aims at
creating spaces of openness, probing and learning instead of trying
to limit options for actors, institutions and processes. It answers
political and organizational complexities with explorative
strategies, instead of relying only on orthodox or preservative
means.

      <link>http://www.utwente.nl/organization/stories/kick-off-for-twente-children’s-academy</link>
      <description>
The Bastille assembly hall played host to some very young
visitors last week, as around 500 children from various primary
schools came to visit the University of Twente. They were given an
introduction to science in a way that was fun and accessible. The
children had a busy programme: they did all sorts of chemistry and
physics experiments, used an inflatable planetarium with real
telescopes and took part in a lesson about sustainable energy. The
result was a fun, busy, and sometimes rather chaotic, Wednesday
afternoon.

      <title>Gold particles against cancer</title>
      <link>http://www.utwente.nl/organization/stories/gold-particles-against-cancer</link>
      <description>
Researchers at the MIRA Institute for Biomedical Technology and
Technical Medicine are developing a method of detecting and
treating tumours with the help of gold particles with dimensions
measure in mere nanometres. The underlying concept is that proteins
(antibodies) can be attached to miniscule particles of gold. The
antibodies ensure that the gold particles come into contact with a
tumour. They can then be detected, or used to destroy the tumour.
It will be some time before the method can be used clinically, but
the researchers have recently made several important scientific
breakthroughs, says researcher Srirang Manohar. He and his
colleagues have already published three scientific papers on their
research this year.

Can variations in the strength and colour of light
enhance the concentration, behaviour, comfort and motivation of
primary-school children? Philips teamed up with the University of
Twente to explore ways in which lighting can contribute to learning
processes in primary schools. The project consisted of two parts: a
field experiment and an experimental laboratory study. The results
indicated that pupils who were exposed to the SchoolVision light
system scored, on average, eighteen percent higher in concentration
tests, were more motivated in the longer term, and were more
appreciative of their learning environment in the long and short

      <link>http://www.utwente.nl/organization/stories/longer-interval-before-beginning-radiotherapy-can-increase-likelihood-of-survival</link>
      <description>
The standard advice for breast-saving treatment for patients
with breast cancer - a technique which involves a combination of
surgery to remove the tumour and radiotherapy - is to begin
radiotherapy within six weeks of surgery. However, research carried
out by Jan Jobsen, a radiotherapist at the MST clinical hospital in
Enschede, shows that there is little scientific evidence to back up
this advice. In fact, survival rates seem to increase when there is
a longer interval before beginning radiotherapy. The research was
carried out as part of Jobsen's PhD, which will be awarded to him
by the Faculty of Behavioural Sciences of the University of Twente
on 30 September.

Our consumption patterns are heavily dependent on water: in

      <title>State Secretary: “IT, the backbone of our society”</title>
      <link>http://www.utwente.nl/organization/stories/ctit-symposium</link>
      <description>
"IT is everywhere." These were the opening words of Peter Apers,
scientific director of Centre for Telematics and Information
Technology, CTIT, at the centre's annual symposium. "Nowadays, it
is perfectly normal for IT to play a role in our everyday lives."
This has numerous advantages, certainly. However, it also means we
have to accept the fact that we are dependent on IT. Take your
mobile phone, for example, your car or your washing machine. For
the majority of people, it is extremely difficult to comprehend how
complex these systems are.

      <description>
Only six more weeks to go before the starter fires his pistol
and the Mongolia Charity Rally gets under way. For Justin Dorneanu
and Avinash Narayanaswamy of the University of Twente, it will mark
the start of a 17,000 kilometre journey. On the way, they will be
burning their own biodiesel, made from frying fat. The pair are
currently busy preparing for the rally. Despite encountering
setbacks during a test rally to Rome, their spirits remain high.
"Our reactor is working well. And the car is running smoothly on
our self-made biodiesel."

      <title>Virtual storyteller: reader takes charge of story</title>
      <link>http://www.utwente.nl/organization/stories/virtual-storyteller</link>
      <description>
It's a wonderful thing to be carried away in a story, but will
you as the reader soon be able to determine how the story unfolds?
With the Virtual Storyteller, developed by Ivo Swartjes at the
Centre for Telematics and Information Technology (CTIT) of the
University of Twente, the reader will soon be able to take an
active role. What he or she does determines how the story
progresses. The key to making this possible is to devise
intelligent software, so that the 'storyteller' is also prepared
for unexpected situations. Swartjes obtained his PhD from the
Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer
Science.

      <link>http://www.utwente.nl/organization/stories/the-shell-makes-the-difference</link>
      <description>
Contrast echography is a commonly used medical imaging technique
that is used to show up abnormal blood circulation in organs and
tumours. The method makes use of ultrasound and a contrast agent
containing special microbubbles. The bubbles are coated with a thin
protective layer to prevent them from dissolving in the blood.
Until now it was assumed that this layer limited the echo, but now
Marlies Overvelde of the University of Twente has shown that it is
precisely the shell that determines the sensitivity of contrast
echography. Her discovery brings the prospect of new diagnostic
techniques. Overvelde will receive her PhD from the faculty of
Science and Technology on 9 April.

      <title>ITC – the sixth faculty at UT</title>
      <link>http://www.utwente.nl/organization/stories/itc-–-the-sixth-faculty-at-ut</link>
      <description>
That striking building, which you are sure to have noticed in
Hengelosestraat on the edge of Enschede city centre, houses the
International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth
Observation It is probably better known as ITC, short for
International Training Centre, the name it was given sixty years
ago. On 1 January 2010 the ITC building becomes home to the sixth
faculty at the University of Twente. The analogy of a child who is
older than its parent springs to mind.

      <description>
At present the task of diagnosing brain disorders using
electroencephalography (EEG) is still performed by humans, but in
years to come it will increasingly be taken over by computerized
systems. This will then also enable us to monitor the brain better
in critical situations, during surgery or in intensive care, said
Michel van Putten upon his inauguration as Professor of Clinical

      <description>
On 3 December, Professor J.W. Drukker delivered his inaugural
address as professor of History of Design at the University of
Twente. Of course, Professor Drukker generally looks at the past,
but on this occasion he will be making an exception and consider
the future. On the basis of current trends, the professor predicted
the future of industrial design. The fundamental 'form follows
function' principle, for example, is becoming obsolete, and is
making way for 'interface design'.

Scientists from the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology of the
University of Twente and the FOM Foundation have succeeded in
transferring magnetic information directly into a semiconductor.
For the first time, this was achieved at room temperature. This
breakthrough brings the development of a more energy efficient form

Various construction projects are currently underway on the

Master Plan. In addition to the need to improve quality (and
following the 2002 fire in Cubicus), the new buildings are required
for the growth in student numbers. As Route '14 indicates, the
University of Twente aims to expand its teaching capacity to 10,000
students, which in turn means an increase in the number of
employees and of course has consequences for the university's
buildings.
