UT has solution for troubled ITER nuclear fusion reactor

The superconducting cables designed for the ITER fusion reactor (cost: 16 billion euros) are unable to withstand the planned forty to sixty thousand charge cycles. Barring a solution, the troubled mega-experiment will suffer still more delays and cost overruns. About one third of total expenditures for the reactor are devoted to the superconducting magnet system. UT researcher Arend Nijhuis thinks he has the solution. He has calculated that a different configuration will make the cables more robust. In the first week of March, ITER will run an experiment costing half a million euros to see whether this theoretical solution will actually work in practice.

3TU: Termination of student grant for Master’s has disproportionate negative effect on engineering students

The executive boards of the three technical universities in the Netherlands feel that the bill entitled ‘Studeren is investeren’ (‘Studying is an investment’) proposed by State Secretary Halbe Zijlstra will have a disproportionately adverse effect on engineering students. Abolishing the grant for Master's students will present an extra hurdle potentially discouraging students from choosing to take a Master's programme in engineering. And this at a time when the private sector is in need of more graduates in technical fields, which would make it seem advisable to invest in this specific target group.

The consequences of technological innovations are often incalculable. Bärbel Dorbeck-Jung, Professor of Regulation and Technology at the University of Twente, is researching how ‘legislation’ deals with uncertainties. Dorbeck-Jung will hold her inaugural lecture on 2 February 2012: “People often mistakenly think that legislation will hamper technological innovation. The opposite is in fact the case...”

A broader focus on health care, centred on the individual, changes the perspective of care. The capacity to lead a meaningful life is at least as important as the elimination or reduction of suffering. This individualized approach may even help to cut health care expenditure. Consider, for instance, the cost of endless attempts to lead a life without pain. These were the views expressed by Ernst Bohlmeijer on the occasion of his inauguration as Professor of Mental Health Promotion, on Thursday 12 January 2012.

Optical techniques enable us to examine single molecules, but do we really understand what we are seeing? After all, the fuzziness caused by effects such as light interference makes these images very difficult to interpret. Researchers at the University of Twente’s MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology adopted a “reverse” approach to spectroscopy which cleaned up images by eliminating background noise. The researchers presented their findings in Physical Review Letters.

Researchers at the University of Twente’s MESA+ research institute, together with ASML, TNO (the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research) and TU/e (Eindhoven University of Technology) have developed a method for etching 3D structures in silicon. These structures behave as photonic crystals (semiconductors for light), making it possible to manipulate light in all sorts of novel ways. For instance, you can use them to “trap” light, or to create zones that are impenetrable to light of specific wavelengths. This method brings the optical computer (a much faster type of computer that uses optical bits instead of electronic ones) one step closer. The researchers give details of their method in two articles that will soon be published in the scientific journals Advanced Functional Materials and the Journal of Vacuum Science and Technology B.

Purchasing alcohol in the Netherlands when you are under 16 is child’s play. That is the unsettling conclusion of a major national study of compliance with the legal age limit for selling alcoholic drinks, carried out by the University of Twente on behalf of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport. In the study, 14 and 15-year-old mystery shoppers made a total of 1,338 attempts to buy alcoholic drinks in supermarkets, off-licences, bars and restaurants, sports clubs and through home delivery services. The vast majority of these attempted purchases were successful. In supermarkets, for example, the Licensing and Catering Act was only complied with in 30 percent of cases. Even when sales staff asked for proof of age, many under-age customers nevertheless succeeded in buying alcohol.

Endocytosis is simpler than suspected

A protein by the name of clathrin plays a key part in endocytosis, the process by which living cells absorb large molecules. The protein can form “cages”, in which these molecules become trapped. Until recently, the details of this process were not fully understood. Using computer simulations, researchers at the University of Twente have now uncovered the secrets of this mechanism. It seems that the traditional view of endocytosis was overly complex.

University of Twente researcher Machiel van der Bijl has developed a system that eliminates the need to test software manually. The system not only facilitates quick and accurate software testing, but it will also save software developers a great deal of money. Van der Bijl: “Software testing easily accounts for a third to half of total development costs. Our automated method can improve product quality and significantly shorten the testing phase, thereby greatly reducing the cost of software development.” Van der Bijl will defend his dissertation on 12 May at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science. He has started a spin-off company called Axini, which will market the new system.

The Dutch healthcare sector is facing major challenges. The population is ageing, causing demand for healthcare to increase. At the same time, the number of healthcare staff is on the wane. In order to ensure that healthcare remains both accessible and affordable, the sector is in dire need of technological development and innovation. In his inaugural address, to be given at the University of Twente on 7 April, Professor Guus van Montfort will call for a new perspective on market forces in healthcare, as a means of ensuring innovation. The new system he envisages will focus more on performance-related funding of hospitals and funding that is directly linked to staff in the healthcare sector.

For years now, transistors have been getting smaller and smaller. Research conducted by Jan-Laurens van der Steen of the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology at University of Twente has shown that electrons in silicon which is less than ten nanometres thick take on unusual characteristics. To gain a better understanding of these nano-scale characteristics, he has worked on an accurate model which will play a very important role in the micro-electronics industry. He will defend his thesis on April 1st 2011 at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science. What makes this PhD particularly special is that it will be awarded jointly by the University of Twente and the University of Udine in Italy.

Two years ago, the University of Twente set out a course that would take it through to 2014 (RoUTe’14). A sharper profile (High Tech, Human Touch) and higher quality of education and research were the basic premises. The University Management Team (UMT) of the UT has now decided to tighten up the current strategy and accelerate the implementation of new plans and measures. This change is a direct result of the plans formulated by the present Cabinet (which has accepted most of the recommendations made by the Veerman Committee), and the drop in resources that is currently facing all universities. The UMT informed staff and students about the plans earlier today.
