The University of Twente is soon to house a new facility which will combine research and education in cardiology, oncology and neurology with outpatient care. The 3500m2 facility will be part of the Center for Medical Imaging North East Netherlands (CMINEN) and will offer the latest technology in the field of medical imaging. The university and MST recently signed a declaration of intent on the use of the new facility. Its planned location is the Langezijds building, which is currently under reconstruction. The Gallery, as the building will then be known, will be a business complex, which will aim to bridge the gap between science and industry. Construction is due to start in week 15. The University of Twente recently signed a cooperation agreement with market players from the region for the construction of The Gallery, a building that aims to bridge the gap between knowledge and business. The Gallery, which is over 300 meters long, will showcase innovative companies and research centres and will be housed in the newly renovated Langezijds building, located on the edge of the university campus that borders with Kennispark Twente. An entrance will be created at the Hengelosestraat to emphasize the facility’s commitment to new innovative businesses in the region. The Gallery will house a range of support desks for innovative entrepreneurs as well as a centre for the general public where innovations will be exhibited. The impetus behind the redevelopment came from the University of Twente and KWP Area Developers, with BTC Twente and Kennispark among its key partners. Research, education and medical treatment One of the largest occupants of the building will be the Center for Medical Imaging that is establishing a high-quality facility where research, education and treatment in cardiology, oncology and neurology will go hand in hand. The facility is equipped with state-of-the-art technology in medical imaging, including a hybrid operating theatre and the very latest PET-MR scanner, which captures high-definition images of inside the human body. Its planned completion is early 2013. According to Martijn Kuit, Director of CMI Twente BV and business director of the University of Twente MIRA Research Institute, the new centre will serve primarily as a research facility, albeit one with a wide range of other possibilities. “The facility will enable us to develop new technologies in healthcare in close cooperation with SMEs and large partners such as Siemens Netherlands. It will also act as a training facility for house officers and Technical Medicine students from the University of Twente.” Collaborative effort The close collaboration between University of Twente and MST aims to expand the region’s capacity to improve clinical diagnostics and to boost innovation in the field of medical imaging technology. The university and MST have signed a declaration of intent that encompasses both the CMI and future cooperation in research and education. The declaration will be developed into a cooperation agreement between both parties containing provisions for the use of the CMI as well as the equipment. Center for Medical Imaging North East Netherlands The new facility forms part of the recently established Center for Medical Imaging North East Netherlands (CMINEN). The CMINEN is a large-scale joint initiative of the University of Twente, the University Medical Center Groningen, the University of Groningen and Siemens Nederland. |
