Mission

The combination of the scientific fields of biomedical technology and technical medicine leads to a unique cooperation across the value chain of healthcare Research & Development. It results in research that covers the full scientific spectrum, from fundamental to applied research and through clinical research to clinical practice.

To support its scientific work, MIRA creates multidisciplinary alliances with knowledge institutes, leading medical institutions and companies. Direct access to relevant technological areas, linked to clinical practice, makes it possible to identify promising treatment methods at an early stage and to drastically reduce the time-to-clinic. This approach is expected to result into the establishment of five new spin-off companies each year.

The University of Twente trains professionals in both biomedical technology and technical medicine. They will play a significant role in the healthcare of the future. Biomedical technologists develop new technical solutions in close collaboration with hospitals and the business community. To achieve this, they adopt a solid engineering approach and a thorough knowledge of physics, chemistry, mechanical engineering and electro technology. Technical medical experts are more closely involved into the treatment of patients and operate as specialists within a team of physicians, combining medical knowledge with the latest technologies.
