VENI grant for Léon Woldering
The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) has awarded a VENI-STW grant to TST researcher Léon Woldering. With this prestigious grant of 250000 euro, Léon can develop his ideas for a further three years. The topic of his research is the “controlled three-dimensional self-assembly of silicon nanoparticles using hydrogen-bonds”. This means that Léon will research the self-assembly of novel tetrahedral silicon particles. For this self-assembly, unique chemical and physical interparticle interactions will be employed. In the future, the process may lead to new nanofabrication methods. In addition, the target structures are extremely interesting as photonic band gap crystals; see the TST article in the Journal of Applied Physics. Such photonic crystals have a so-called band gap for light, which means that certain frequencies of light cannot exist in these structures. This phenomenon has interesting consequences for, for instance, the spontaneous emission of light sources that have been placed inside the crystals. Whether such a band gap is indeed present in the target structures will be investigated.
