Cell function mimicry using polymer nano-containers
Qi Chen (MTP group)
Objective
The project is directed to the realization of a novel cell function mimicking system, where a container within nanometer size range will be created using block copolymers, certain bio-substance will be kept or react inside the container, as they do in or at the membrane of cells or sub-structures (e. g. lysosomes) of the cell. Further, a stimulus-response system should be coupled to the container or the bio-substance to allow the reaction being controlled by external signals (e. g. light, pH, etc.). The system will be created and then subject to a broad range of experimental techniques for ensembles and individuals of containers. Although the construction of an artificial cell is the ultimate aim, simple systems, such as vesicles, micro-/nano-spheres may already partly give us insight into this area.
