Excursion Dairy Campus, Biogas
EXCURSION Dairy Campus Leeuwarden, Biogas and Thermal Power Plant.
The MEEM programme offers site-visits and excursions to relevant organizations to illustrate how the concepts that are taught in class are implemented in practice. On November 10th 2011 MEEM and EMSI students visited Nij Bosma Zathe, a large research farm where biogas is produced from cow dung. Dairy Campus performs research for innovations in livestock farming (animal feed, feed crop production, fertilisation and housing) as well as for agricultural nature management (structures and grassland bird management) and into the production of green energy through organic fertiliser, among others.
The focus for our visit was the production of green energy. At Nij Bosma Zathe cow manure is fermented, along with grass and residues from the food industry. The process takes about 50 days. During fermentation in the fermentation tank, biogas is released. This biogas is transported to the power plant through a 5.5 km long pipeline. We visited both sites: the farm and the thermal power plant.
