MEEM 10 alumnus presenting at Conference (April 2011)

MEEM 10 student presenting at the 2nd International Conference for Prospective Leaders in Climate Protection and Resource Conservation in Germany

One of our Alumni from MEEM 10 (2007/2008) Mr. Bibek Raj Kandel from Kathmandu, Nepal has been selected in the pre-selection round for the research fellowship competition by The Humboldt Foundation in Bonn, Germany. His research proposal is titled “Market Based Climate Adaption and Private Sector Climate Financing in Rural Nepal.”

The overall research goal of the research is to analyse how the new market based energy financing for adaptation need, can be conceived to attract private sector investment.

Nepal falls on the list of countries vulnerable to likely receive negative physical impacts of climate change. Large population of the country still lives in the remote hills and mountains and their livelihood heavily rely on climate sensitive sector, such as agriculture. There will be additional energy requirement in climate resilient scenarios to cater the energy need that would be additional to the business as usual scenario to help these rural people move to alternative forms of livelihood, which in many cases will be energy intensive. More energy will also be needed to improve conventional climate vulnerable agricultural practices. This situation demands huge financial investment in energy projects. So, a new market based adaptation mechanism is crucial to attract Financial Institutions (FI) in adaptation projects. Identifying what drives FIs in climate financing is a first step to understand the market based adaptation mechanism.

He will be presenting his proposal on the conference:
