Visiting Fellowship for Ann-Kristin Kölln at the University of Gothenburg
Ann-Kristin Kölln, PhD student at POLMT, has been invited as Visiting PhD Student to the Department of Political Science at the University of Gothenburg (Sweden). From 1st January 2012 she will pursue her research for a period of 6 months as part of the Multidisciplinary Opinion & Democracy Research Group. Her primary interests will be in further developing her PhD thesis and thereby contributing to the research theme of Off-Election Democracy headed by Peter Esaiasson.
ESS grant for Sedef Turper
Sedef Turper, PhD student at POLMT, has recently been granted with funding by the European Social Survey (ESS) for a visit to the University of Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona. In February 2012 she will visit the ESS Competence Centre there to work on her project on survey measurement quality in collaboration with Willem Saris.
Dutch Parliamentary Election Study shortlisted for funding program NOW
The Social Sciences Division of the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) has shortlisted the Dutch Parliamentary Election Study for its funding scheme ‘Longitudinal Studies in Social and Behavioral Sciences’. In the period 2012-2015, the principal investigators of the Dutch Parliamentary Election Study may apply to NWO for funding to the amount of € 245.000.
The Social Sciences Division received a total of 21 applications in this round. On the basis of an advice of an international selection committee, six studies have been shortlisted. The most important consideration of the committee was:
“The committee considers this study an excellent election study carried out by high-quality research groups of different universities. The study has resulted in excellent international publications. The methodological quality is very good. Comparability with previous waves and with other countries is high. The data are easily accessible for national and international researchers. The social relevance is very high given landslide changes in Dutch electoral results last decade.”
The main applicant of this proposal is dr. Henk van der Kolk (POLMT).
Project Nederlandse wetenschapsagenda toegekend
Onderzoekers van het onderzoeksinstituut IGS van de Universiteit Twente gaan samen met onderzoekers van de Universiteit Leiden onderzoeken of de representatieve democratie in een legitimiteitscrisis verkeert. De KNAW stelt hiervoor, in het kader van de Nederlandse Wetenschapsagenda, € 300.000,- beschikbaar. Afgelopen voorjaar publiceerde de Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen (KNAW) de Nederlandse Wetenschapsagenda. Hierin staan de 49 belangrijkste wetenschappelijke vragen van dit moment verwoord, bij de beantwoording waarvan Nederlandse onderzoekers een bijzondere rol kunnen spelen. In het verlengde hiervan heeft de KNAW vier projectvoorstellen gehonoreerd waarin de eerste vier vragen van deze agenda verder worden uitgewerkt.
Eén van de gehonoreerde projecten betreft de vraag of de representatieve democratie in een legitimiteitscrisis verkeert. Dit project staat onder leiding van de KNAW leden Jacques Thomassen en Kees Aarts (beiden verbonden aan onderzoeksinstituut IGS van de Universiteit Twente) en Rudy Andeweg (Universiteit Leiden).
Het project moet op basis van een review van bestaand onderzoek antwoord geven op de vraag of er sprake is van een legitimiteitscrisis en zo ja, wat de oorzaken daarvan zijn en wat er aan gedaan kan worden. De KNAW stelt € 300.000,- voor dit project beschikbaar.
Het project wordt uitgevoerd in het kader van het programma 'Over grenzen' van de Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen. Het programma stelt Akademieleden in staat activiteiten te organiseren over onderwerpen van De Nederlandse Wetenschapsagenda. Met hun activiteiten voeden zij de discussie over die thema's en dragen zo bij aan de volgende editie van De Nederlandse Wetenschapsagenda, die voor 2015 op de rol staat.

Political Science at Twente among the best
The recent QS World University Rankings ranks the Political Science department at the University of Twente among the best. According to the overall score of the QS World University Rankings, Twente ranks third of the Dutch Political Science departments, behind the large departments at the universities of Amsterdam and Leiden and ahead of three other ranked Dutch departments. But according to the QS Citation Index, the most widely accepted measure of research strength per faculty, Twente ranks first among all Dutch institutions and can easily stand international comparison. According to the Citation Index, the Department of Political Science and Research Methods ranks at 41 in a worldwide survey of 150 renowned Political Science departments - above institutions like Harvard and Berkeley.

Tussenrapportage onderzoek wijkcoaches Velve Lindenhof (Enschede)
De gemeente Enschede experimenteert met een nieuw type professional: de wijkcoach. De wijkcoaches hebben bevoegdheden meegekregen die regulier toekomen aan organisaties die betrokken zijn bij de aanpak van achterstandsproblematiek. Zij kunnen door de andere inrichten en organisatie van het uitvoeringsproces ‘echt zaken doen’. Onlangs is een rapportage uitgebracht waarin de eerste tussenstand wordt opgemaakt. Wie benieuwd is naar de bevindingen, kan het rapport (geschreven door Mirjan Oude Vrielink, Pieter-Jan klok en Bas Denters) via deze link downloaden.
Kees Aarts member of KNAW
The members of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen, KNAW) have chosen 20 new members. Kees Aarts, professor of political science at the POLMT department and scientific director of IGS, is one of them. The election takes place every year on the basis of scientific performance and after consultation of the scientific community.
Twente in Zeit Ranking

Twente is now listed in the political science/social sciences category of the widely read ranking of the German journal Die Zeit (http://ranking.zeit.de/che2011/de/rankingkompakt?esb=28&ab=3&hstyp=1), although without a rating on most items (only a “good” in terms of international orientation). Besides Twente, the ranking now also includes Amsterdam, Leiden, Groningen and Nijmegen. Previously, Maastricht and St. Gallen were the only foreign universities listed (and indeed also included in terms of student survey, etc.) in the ranking.

Political Leaders and Democratic Elections unravels and evaluates the importance of political leaders in the vote decision. The book systematically assesses the role of political leaders in the vote decision in nine democracies (Australia, Britain, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and the United States), over a period of up to 50 years, using election surveys. It assesses the changes in political communication (particularly the rise of televised politics) over the past decades. It explains how important political leaders are in different types of political systems. It shows that the electoral system and other political institutions do affect the share of leader evaluations in vote choice. And it shows, in contrast with popular wisdom, how unimportant characteristics of the leaders themselves, characteristics of their parties, and characteristics of their voters are for vote choice. Finally, the volume shows that voters tend to let themselves be guided by the leaders they like rather than being pushed away from those they dislike.
