Prof.dr. Gert-Jan Hospers
Basic information
Gert-Jan Hospers (Enschede, 1974) teaches Economic Geography at the University of Twente (0.8 fte) and has a special chair in Place Marketing at the Radboud University Nijmegen (0.2 fte). In 1999 Gert-Jan graduated in economics, public policy and law at the universities of Tilburg, Twente and Utrecht. After a job at the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs Gert-Jan returned to the University of Twente in 2000 to teach economics. In 2004 he defended his PhD-thesis Regional Economic Change in Europe: a Neo-Schumpeterian Vision. Gert-Jan is co-editor of the book series European Regions (LIT Verlag) and one of the editors of Regional Insights, Geografie and Kunst en Wetenschap. Before, he was editorial board member of Regions and De Europese Gemeente. In 2007 and 2008 Gert-Jan reported on European cities for the Slimme Steden-series in Het Financieele Dagblad. In 2010 and 2011 he wrote – with Reinder Boeve – on Dutch regions for the series Nederland in Twaalf Delen in Geografie. Over the years Gert-Jan has written columns for De Twentsche Courant Tubantia and Luxity: Magazine voor Regio Arnhem & Nijmegen.
Research and expertise
Gert-Jan is interested in the economic and social geography of North West Europe with a preference for the periphery. Since 2000 he has explored the particularities of old industrial areas, place marketing, regional cluster policy and the hype of creative cities. To confront theory with practice Gert-Jan has done applied research in several regions, including Twente, Groningen, the Ruhr Area, the Øresund Region and the North East of England. Gert-Jan is member of the Regional Studies Association and the Koninklijk Nederlands Aardrijkskundig Genootschap. He also takes part in the scientific committee of Cittaslow International and is chair of Stichting Jane that propagates the ideas of urban thinker Jane Jacobs. At present, he is writing on place marketing and demographic change policy.
Teaching and speaking
Gert-Jan teaches the MA-courses City- en Regiomarketing and De Economie van Duitse en Nederlandse Steden at the Radboud University Nijmegen. At the University of Twente he teaches a few BA-courses, such as Regional Innovation in Europe, Economics, Institutionele Economie and Organisatie- en Omgevingsanalyse. In addition, Gert-Jan gives seminars and talks for the Nederlandse School voor Openbaar Bestuur, Master City Developer, Avicenna Academy and speakers agency Assemblee. For the Bestuursacademie Nederland he teaches modules on local economic policy, place marketing and demographic change policy. His presentations are based on books, including Het Ruhrgebied voor Romantici (2010, with Peter Timmerman), Krimp! (2010) and Er Gaat Niets Boven Citymarketing (2011).
