World Press Photo comes to the University of Twente Campus

As part of the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the University of Twente, the World Press Photo brings its travelling display to the UT Campus on 6th October 2011. This globally-unique exhibition provides a showcase for the winners of the annual international photo competition for Press photographers. There is a formal opening for the exhibition on 6th October, and from 7th-27th October, the display will be open to members of the public.

Each year in February, an international jury of nineteen independent members convenes to judge entries. The competition has nine different prize classes, and is open to press photographers, wire services, newspapers and magazines from across the world. This year, a total of 108,059 photos were entered by 5,691 photographers representing 125 different nationalities.

Each year, an exhibition is compiled from the jury’s selection, this year comprising over 160 of the best submitted photographs, and curated at about 100 locations globally. The exhibition seeks to use this collection of award-winning photos from the previous year to promote photojournalism to the public at large. The show is intended to provide a yardstick against which the profession can judge itself and laud excellence. At the same time, and in contrast to many traditional photography exhibitions, the show attracts a large and diverse public audience, to experience an attractive and authoritative visual record of the key moments of the previous year.

World Press Photo is an independent not-for-profit foundation, established in 1955 and headquartered in Amsterdam. The foundation’s primary aim is supporting and promoting the craft of photojournalism globally. World press photo has evolved into a leading independent centre of expertise and meeting point for experts in the field. Education plays a fundamental role in its mission. World Press Photo organises seminars and workshops in developing countries for photographers, image agencies and editors. World Press Photo receives support from the Dutch Postcode Lottery and is sponsored worldwide by Canon and TNT.
