General information

Shirish Sinha did his Masters in Rural Management from the Institute of Rural Management, Anand (IRMA) in 1995. He is at present a Ph D student in the department, and his Ph D thesis links the issue of energy poverty with energy sector policies especially in the context of energy sector reforms in India on access to modern energy carriers in rural areas. The thesis (tentatively titled: Alleviating or Aggravating Energy Poverty?) is a policy research in the field of energy and development. Ph D study involved case studies in three regions in India (Gosaba island, Sundarbans in West Bengal; Bastar in Chattisgarh; and Kalahandi in Orissa).

Shirish has received two fellowships to support his Ph D. He received Joint Japan World Bank Graduate Scholarship for 1999-2001. He then received WOTRO Developing Country Fellowship from WOTRO for 2001-03.

Shirish has over ten years of research experience in the field of energy and rural development. Shirish is at present completing his term as Researcher, Water – Energy, with the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) at their South Asia Regional Office in India. He has been associated with IWMI since 2003, first as a Visiting Research Scholar and then as a full time Researcher. His research is on water – energy nexus in rural areas of India.

Shirish started his career with the Tata Energy Research Institute (TERI) in 1995 as a Research Associate. His research included work on energy policy, rural energy planning, socio-economic impact assessment of rural energy interventions, renewable energy technologies including institutional options for commercialisation.

Shirish has published fifteen papers, of which two have been published in refereed journal; four books including one training manual, seven articles, and fifteen research reports.
