Victoria Marin holds a degree in Law from Colombia (1999). In 2004 she received her Master degree in international and European law from Utrecht University (LL.M) and in 2008 she obtained a Master degree in International Relations from Bologna University (MA). She worked as a lawyer for eight years in Colombia giving legal advice in international affairs and lectured on International Contracts and International Commercial Law at EAFIT University (Medellín – Colombia). She has closely followed the development of the biofuels programme in her country and the global debate about biofuels.
Victoria’s interest in biofuels debates led her to pursue her PhD degree at CSTM as part of the research team working on the impacts of biofuels in the developing countries. She joined CSTM in June 2009. Her research deals with the mechanisms and processes connecting biofuels production with conflict, violence and human rights violations in the areas of potential or current production of biofuels/feedstock in Colombia, from a political ecology perspective. As part of her research she analyses: i) the structural forces at different scales (international and national policies; global, national and local institutions) that underlie conflict and violence associated to biofuels/biofuels feedstock production in Colombia; and ii) different approaches to assess biofuels’ social sustainability.
