Theo de Bruijn (1964) holds a Master’s degree in Technology and Society from Technical University Eindhoven and a Ph.D. in public administration from the University of Twente. He joined CSTM in 1989 and specialized in the governance of industrial transformation. He publishes and teaches on the dynamics of the interaction between public authorities and industry in environmental affairs. His research activities are commissioned by the Dutch National Science Foundation (NWO), the European Commission, Dutch ministries, provincial governments, municipalities and private companies. In addition to his research activities, he teaches Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development in undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

Theo is Chair of the Coordinating Committee of the Greening of Industry Network, a global network for the transition towards sustainable industry (http://www.greeningofindustry.org).

He was a Visiting Scholar (summer 2001) at J.F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.

Expertise

Dr. De Bruijn has worked with many companies on strengthening their CSR practices. He has published extensively on sustainable development, corporate social responsibility, and shared responsibility. He received an 'Outstanding Paper Award' at the Literati Network Awards for Excellence 2009 for the paper "Partnerships for corporate social responsibility; a review of concepts and strategic options" published in Management Decision, Vol. 46 No. 1, 2008:152-167 (co-authors: André Nijhof and Hakan Honders). Another noteworthy publication is the book he co-edited for The MIT Press: Industrial Transformation; Voluntary, collaborative and information-based approaches in environmental policies in the US and Europe, The MIT Press, 2005 (with Vicki Norberg-Bohm). He also contributed to The A to Z of Corporate Social Responsibility, Wiley, 2007 (edited by Wayne Visser, Dirk Matten, Manfred Pohl and Nick Tolhurst) and to The challenge of organizing and implementing corporate social responsibility, Palgrave McMillan, 2006 (edited by Jan Jonker and Marco de Witte).
