Cheryl de Boer (1978) holds a Bachelor of Engineering and Management and a Master of Engineering and Public Policy both from McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada. The focus of her Masters degree was on the Implementation of International Environmental Agreements related to Mitigating Climate Change.

She has worked both as an Engineer with Siemens Canada, as a Research Assistant on Transboundary Water Governance at McMaster University and as a Public Servant dealing with Stormwater Management for the City of Hamilton.

Cheryl began working at the CSTM in September of 2008 on her PhD focusing on International Water Policy Comparisons between North America and the EU. Her research focuses on the different characteristics of regimes that enable local level stream restoration projects to be successful in contributing to a sustainable water resource. In addition she is working on the ISBP+ project as well as the international project team entitled New Rurality. The ISBP+ project deals with Dynamic multifunctional systems, adaptive strategies and flexible regimes” (DAF). The New Rurality project work is in conjunction with an international research term interested in the multifunctional land uses and effects on the sustainability of rural land development.

While in Hamilton, Cheryl was also very involved as the Vice President of the Bay Area Restoration Council, a local Non-profit Organisation formed in 1991 and tasked with restoring and protecting Hamilton Harbour and its watershed. BARC works with stakeholders to create a multi-use Harbour that balances vibrant and diverse ecosystems with opportunities for public recreation along a bay that is the economic engine of the region.
