Professional Background and Research Interests
Marijk van der Wende is professor in higher education at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and honorary professor at the Centre for Higher Education Policy Studies (CHEPS) at the University of Twente.
She is the founding Dean of Amsterdam University College an international liberal arts & science college established jointly by the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and the Universiteit van Amsterdam.
She is a member of the Strategy Group of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, chair of its Undergraduate Committee and previously chaired its Honours Committee and its Internationalization Board.
She is vice and past President of the Governing Board of the Programme on Institutional Management in Higher Education (IMHE) of the OECD, Member of the International Advisory Board of the Centre for the Study of World Class Universities, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Member of the Higher Education Authority Ireland, Member of the Scientific Board of the Dutch Military Academy, and member of various national and international editorial boards.
She previously held positions at CHEPS, the University of Twente (1998-2008), the University of Amsterdam (1998-2000), the Academic Cooperation Association (ACA) in Brussels (1994-1998), Nuffic (1992-1998), and was a visiting scholar at the Centre for Studies in Higher Education, at the University of California at Berkeley (USA).
Her research focuses on innovation in higher education, the impact of globalisation on higher education and related processes of internationalisation and Europeanisation. She published widely on how these processes affect higher education systems, their structure and governance, institutional strategies, curriculum design, quality assurance methods, and the use of ICT.
Van der Wende holds BA degrees in teaching and pedagogy, and MA a PhD degrees in educational sciences, from the University of Amsterdam and the University of Utrecht respectively.
