Ngo, Jenny: Executive management styles and the role of the Dean in Indonesian autonomous higher institutions
The changing status of state higher institutions to become autonomous institutions is seen as the great impact of globalization era. In this era of globalization, state higher institutions need to keep up with the progress and cannot rely on the bureaucratic structures. Therefore, having their autonomous status, state higher institutions are challenged to transform the traditional and bureaucratic management system governed heavily by the government into the autonomous management system governed independently by the institutions. One of the strategic plans is that the autonomous higher institutions start focusing their power on faculty basis. In the context, the faculties are the cutting edge in order to survive and compete with others both nationally and internationally. The aim of this PhD research is to present an empirically based analysis of the changing role of the deanship in autonomous higher institutions in Indonesia. This research particularly focuses on how ‘modern’ deans define their academic and managerial roles and responsibilities as well as how they try to meet the role expectations.
