Supervision for Master and Bachelor Thesis Assignments

CHEPS offers a range of high-level policy-based Bachelors and Masters assignments for student of Public Administration, Business Administration or European studies, in which students apply their theoretical, conceptual and methodological expertise in the field of higher education, research and innovation. The focus is on problem diagnosis, design and evaluation of alternative solutions for perceived policy problems and formulation of substantive policy advice.

CHEPS has an extensive global network and carries out research projects around the globe, which gives many opportunities to do (part of) your (Masters) thesis abroad. In principle, the (Masters) thesis is written in English.

A Bachelors thesis comprises 15 EC and is usually carried out in the fourth quartile of the third Bachelors year. The thesis consists of a written report and a personal reflection. The thesis is publicly defended (colloquium).

For more information, click here (Dutch only).

In the Masters programme Public Administration, including the special tracks such as Higher Education, the second and fourth quarter are devoted to writing the Masters thesis (25 EC). In the second quarter students develop a clear problem statement, explore relevant theoretical approaches and develop a research strategy under supervision of CHEPS staff. In order to prepare adequately for the thesis students will follow a special joint course in social science methodology (5 EC). In the fourth quarter students execute their research strategy by collecting and analysing data and finalise their Masters thesis with an emphasis on policy-driven conclusions and recommendations. The thesis is publicly defended (colloquium).

In the Bachelors and Masters thesis the student shows his or her ability to

1) apply knowledge and competencies at an academic level and in a systematic way,

2) use scientific sources in a systematic and critical way,

3) plan and manage his or her own study process,

4) communicate with supervisors and colleagues adequately and

5) reflect upon the process and the product of his or her study activities.

Students will develop in-depth knowledge and understanding of actors, institutions and policies in the field of higher education, research or innovation. They have to integrate theoretical and practical knowledge and expertise as well as to train their ability to diagnose, conceptualise and analyse policy issues ad to systematically reason on policy implications.
