Related research

Two research groups at the University of Twente participate in the Master’s programme in Philosophy of Science, Technology and Society:

Philosophy

Philosophy (WIJSB) focuses on the philosophy and ethics of technology and engineering science. Research is concentrated on three themes:

-

Ethics of technology: focuses on normative, evaluative and critical issues in relation to technology and society; investigates what good technology is and how both society and engineering practices should be organized in order to have technology that is ethically and politically acceptable.

-

Philosophy of human-technology relations: focuses on how technology influences and constitutes human nature and human existence; the rapid development of mind and body enhancing technologies and their influence on human faculties such as rationality, self-consciousness, agency, and autonomy is also an important topic of inquiry.

-

Philosophy of science in practice: aims at a better understanding of the internal dynamics of scientific research in the context of technological applications; the focus is not only on how pre-existing knowledge gets applied to practical ends, but also on how knowledge itself is fundamentally shaped by its intended use.

Science, Technology, and Policy Studies

Science, Technology, and Policy Studies (STePS) takes the assessment and governance of innovations and emerging technologies as its central theme of research. Research at STePS consists of three themes that are closely interrelated:

-

Science and Innovation Policies addresses problems and specific issues concerning the governance of Science, Technology and Innovation;

-

Technology Dynamics and Assessment focuses on the dynamics of technological development and the assessment of related socio-technical change;

-

History of Science, Technology and Society takes up specific issues related to scientific and technological change and shows our interest in longer-term developments and transformations.

Twente Graduate School

Twente Graduate School (TGS) offers high-quality educational programmes based on subjects closely related to the work of the university’s research institutes and taught and supervised by expert researchers from these same institutes. It offers an increasing variety of integrated Master’s and PhD programmes for outstanding graduate students who are keen to pursue a career in scientific research. The graduate programmes associated with the Master’s programme in Philosophy of Science, Technology and Society are Ethics and Technology, Governance of Knowledge and Innovation, and Human-centred Interaction Technologies.
