Specialization "Design and Styling"
of the master 'Industrial Design Engineering'The Master's degree track "Design and Styling" focuses on the design of tangible, intelligent products, such as recumbent bicycles, vacuum cleaners, portable CD players, power tools, electric shavers, fitness equipment or office furniture. An essential aspect of the products addressed is that they respond to external signals. This track does not focus on the design of a product's specialist (i.e. technical) inner workings, but rather on the moving parts, the user interface, the product's styling and the user's experience with the product. It highlights ways to take the different types of users into account. The design process presented also considers such issues as safety, effectiveness, comfort and cost.
In industrial design engineering a designer has to play several roles. Sometimes the most important part of industrial design is the application of a new technique. Sometimes the development of a better user interface is more important. Most of the time, design is about the combination and integration of a lot of these aspects. However, styling always plays an important role. In the master specialization Design and Styling, attention is given to all aspects of product development but the main points are the styling and the design of emotional benefits.
Graduates of the master track Design & Styling often become employed in technical- commercial functions, for example marketing, or as a product manager. It’s also a possibility to work in advisement for innovation project. Another possibility is education and/or research at a university or a research company. Most of the students however are working as a designer at a design office or on a design department of a company.
