Building Systems Design concerns the development of new building components of new building systems (a set of interrelated components) and adds to the existing program of Industrial Design Engineering (IDE) which focuses on the development of professional and consumer products.

In the construction sector for almost one hundred years, building materials have been produced in factories and then assembled to complete components on building sites. Thanks to the demand for flexibility and sustainability from the construction sector, developments in ICT, and new materials and production methods, construction involving components has a bright future. Through constructing with components, the increasing complexities and high execution speeds that are demanded regarding the process of organizing the design and construction processes can also be addressed.
