Individual minors

Almost every student will choose a regular minor in English (or one from the list of institutionalised minors if they wish to take a minor in Dutch), because the selection of minors is extensive and varied enough and the quality of all of these minors is guaranteed by the procedures of validation (in Dutch) and accreditation (in Dutch) of all minors.

The admission from all Bachelor studies to all minors is regulated in two tables, the "minor admission matrix" (in Dutch) and the "minor specific demands" (in Dutch). Apart from that, you can only enter a minor if you meet the general rule of admission of 80 European Credits (for more information, please refer to the question "Will I be able to take a minor?" on the web page Organisational rules of this website.

In exceptional cases, you might consider taking an individual minor.

Individual minors

An individual minor is a minor which is composed by the minor-student himself/herself, in consultation with his/her study counsellor and/or a relevant coach (e.g. a member of UT's scientific staff). Any individual plan for an individual minor will have to be submitted to the examination board of the minor-student's own study.

At any moment, it is possible to register through OSIRIS for an individual minor. Registering for an individual minor during the regular period of registration has the advantage that your registration will fit smoothly into all other administrative procedures.

To set up an individual minor, the following consecutive steps should be taken by the minor-student.

·

Contact the intermediary for individual minors of your own bachelor study, or, if not available for a longer period of time, the director of education ("opleidingsdirecteur") of your own study.

·

In consultation with this intermediary or any other relevant coach (e.g. a member of UT's scientific staff), compose your own individual minor which is balanced, coherent, at a third-year's academic level, contributing to your academic development (etc.).

·

Write a letter of motivation to the examination board of your own faculty in which you explain your plans concerning your individual minor and elaborate on all demands mentioned in the previous bullet.

·

Complete the form at the bottom of this web page. In consultation with your intermediary or personal coach, choose a relevant name for your minor (which is necessary to represent your minor on your diploma supplement after graduation and in case you would like to receive a certificate after completing your minor).

·

Send or bring the completed form and your letter of motivation to the secretary of your examination board. In all faculties, "Bureau Onderwijszaken" can help you.

·

Wait for the decision of your examination board.
