General information

Majors

In 1999, 29 European Ministers of Education have agreed on restructuring higher education in Europe, resulting in the Bologna Declaration. As a consequence, the University of Twente has decided to offer all of its studies in the Bachelor-Master structure from the academic year 2001-2002 onwards.

This also affects Major-minor. In the Bachelor-Master structure, all minors will be offered in the first semester of the third and final year of Bachelor studies.

Minors have a study load of 20 European Credits (EC, please note five exceptions at the bottom of this page). The remaining 160 EC of all three-year Bachelor studies are indicated by the word 'Major'. This means that in a complete Bachelor study at UT:

·

8/9 of all courses are Major courses and

·

1/9 of all courses are minor courses.

As a result, the word 'Major' is equivalent to 'Bachelor study excluding the minor'. All information on Majors can be found on the websites of the various Bachelor studies. The remainder of this website will focus purely on minors.

The above mentioned Major-minor structure is valid for all UT-students in generations from 2001 onwards.

Minors

A minor is a balanced, coherent, well-structured, validated set of (at least) 20 EC of various courses at a third-year's academic level.

The main intention of a minor is to offer the participating students a platform for the (further) development of their academic competencies. Within broad boundary conditions, students are free to take the minor of their own personal preference. However, they are explicitly stimulated to take a minor which differs significantly from their own discipline to develop specific academic competencies, like communicating with non-peers and reflecting on the own discipline.

The main categories of minors are institutionalised minors (in Dutch, among which are minors in English) and individual minors. Within these categories, there are some more subdivisions. More details are in the formal document "Soorten minors" (in Dutch, a kind of constitution for UT-minors).

The main rules of the game are summarised on the page Organisational rules of this website. Taking note of these rules is strongly recommended. They are also in the general information brochure on minors (in Dutch), which is also available in a paper edition at the minor information market.

The organisational rules on minors also mention the minor admission matrix (in Dutch) and the minor specific demands (in Dutch) that some minors put on top of the general requirement of 80 European Credits. Both are also available at the minor information market.

Five theme minors (four of which can be taken in English) have or may have a different study load:

·

Global Human Resources Management & Technology (always 30 EC)

·

Innovation & Entrepreneurship (20 or 30 EC)

·

International Management & Exploration (20 or 30 EC)

·

Leren Lesgeven (in Dutch only, 20 EC, in some cases 30 EC)

·

Sustainable Development in Developing Countries (20 or 25 EC)
