Prof.dr. Stefan Kuhlmann Visits Colombia
During one week past November, Stefan Kuhlmann, director of the Department of Science, Technology, and Policy Studies (STePS) of the Faculty of Management and Governance, participated in several events organized by leading Colombian academic and government institutions.
He was keynote speaker at the “International Conference on Latin American Political and Policy: trends and challenges” held at the Universidad Externado de Colombia, where he addressed (with Dr. Gonzalo Ordonez, STePS) conceptual, political and policy issues related with the Global Governance of Knowledge and Innovation in Non-OECD countries.

In a second talk, as special guest at the Colciencias “Pedro Amaya” Seminar, a space open for debate involving local policymakers and entrepreneurs held at the Bogota Chamber of Commerce, he touched upon the role, challenges and impacts of the so-called “Third Mission” of Universities.
In addition, Prof.dr. Kuhlmann was invited to the Colombian Observatory of Science and Technology to comment on the project “History and Evolution of the Colombian National Science, Technology and Innovation System”, where he met researchers working on topics of interest of STePS.
In a second meeting at the Colombian National Planning Department he was invited to discuss about the design of a World Bank-sponsored-programme intended to promote manufacturing extension services focused on SMEs; a strategy meant to boost Colombian competitiveness in the near future.
At Colciencias, the Colombian National Science Foundation, he met with the acting Director, Dr. Jorge Cano and several deputy directors and programme managers, to discuss about Colombian CTI Policy and Prospective.
At the end of his visit, and in representation of the Dean of the Faculty of MB, Prof.dr. Kuhlmann formalized the signature of a Memorandum of Understanding with the Universidad Externado de Colombia to facilitate the exchange of students, researchers and professors, as well as the design and implementation of joint initiatives. It is expected that the Georgia Institute of Technology (a leading US university), also present in the Externado’s International Conference, and with which STePS have a longstanding relation, will also join the MOU with both universities in the months to come.
