Objectives and activities of IGS Datalab

Objectives

IGS Datalab strengthens research by investing in data handling that is both legally and ethically correct, and methodically sound for existing data and data to be collected.

IGS Datalab…

1.

Supports researchers with data collection, data sharing and data storage by:

·

Providing the technical conditions which (the collection and archiving of) research data must meet (preferred formats, encryption files, storage protocols);

·

Accommodating an organisational infrastructure and substantive support in preparing data collection, amongst other things by supporting data collection through various methods (survey server);

·

Accommodating online access to external data sets;

·

Supporting safe and sustainable storage of, as well as access to collected data when these are not available at DANS.

2.

Offers a safe environment for both respondents and researchers for (the handling of) data by:

·

Providing the legal and ethical norms to which data collection and archiving need to adhere;

·

Providing offline facilities that allow researchers to handle sensitive information (including personal details of the highest risk level).

3.

Improves the accurate analysis of collected data by:

·

Providing information on available software via the IGS Datalab website;

·

Informing researchers via the IGS Datalab website about data collection and data analysis courses, and stimulating the supply of such courses;

·

Providing sufficient computing power to allow the use of software independently of regular work stations.

Cooperation

IGS DataLab is closely affiliated to various internal and external organisations and stakeholders that are associated with data management. IGS Datalab consults amongst others with the UT’s Library & Archive, DANS, SURF and the concerned deans.

Funding

IGS DataLab and its activities are envisioned to be self-supporting. This implies that researchers can allocate part of their research budget to IGS Datalab for its support.
