Conference Themes
This conference will bring together researchers who undertake an analysis of microinsurance. Papers may have a theoretical or empirical focus. A non-exhaustive list of research topics includes:
Impact – There are still only a few rigorous studies on the impact of microinsurance and most existing studies focus on health insurance. As the microcredit field has shown a broad range of impact indicators is necessary to guide microinsurance investment and development. What indicators are relevant in the context of microinsurance? Are they similar for different contexts and different types of microinsurance? What is the impact of microinsurance in comparison to other alternatives such as savings and credit
Even though a trend can be observed towards more experimental and rigorous research designs in ongoing microinsurance research, the context of microinsurance does not always lend itself to experiments. What methodologies are best for investigating the impact in different contexts?
Demand, product design and business process – Several studies exist focusing on the influence of product and marketing characteristics, risk preferences and household characteristics on microinsurance demand. However, the uptake of microinsurance is still said to be relatively low and increasing slowly. How can we understand demand for microinsurance? Are we looking at the right factors for explaining demand? What is the role of financial literacy, trust, networks and context factors on demand?
Institutional aspects - Many public and private actors are involved in the micro insurance field. How can or should the relationships between these different actors be governed or managed? How can Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) be shaped? What is the role of governments and policy with respect to universal health care? Who currently pays for the costs of natural disasters and what is the potential role of micro insurance? What is the role of academia in the field of micro insurance? What legal and regulatory frameworks are necessary or beneficial for microinsurance market development?
