GENERAL INFORMATION
S.G. Daedalus is the study association of the study Industrial Design Engineering (IDE) at the University of Twente. The association has been founded in 2002, by a number of freshmen from the same year IDE was founded.
The main goal of the association is to contribute to the development of the study Industrial Design Engineering and its students. Education is one of the main themes in this development. S.G. Daedalus is occupied with evaluating education, handling questions and complaints, as well as offering extra educational-related activities such as workshops, excursions, lectures and the publishing of a study guide.
To make sure all this work is managed in a proper way the board has a special member, the Commissioner of Education.
The study association exists for and because of students. This means that the association functions fully because of the efforts of the enthusiastic IDE-students. S.G. Daedalus offers students a great place to gain some experience in board- and committee-work. Since IDE is founded, S,G Daedalus has grown a lot. The association has about 750 members now, with a hundred plus active students.
These active students take part in different committees, organizing several activities varying from the unsurpassed Daedalusparty to excursions to company factories to give our students more insight in the world that is called Design. Because of the committees Daedalus offers its member the possibility to increase their skills. There is a committee for everyone, who wants to do something for the association.
Since S.G. Daedalus started in 2002, many contacts are made with companies and the board’s Functionary External Affairs (FEA) is constantly busy trying to enlarge this network. There even is a special committee, respectively the partnershipcommittee, to help the FEA with his job.
When IDE started, back in 2001, this was the beginning of Industrial Design in the region of Twente.
From the start, design agencies have been involved in the development of the study and they sponsor the study association as well. S.G. Daedalus also uses these contacts with agencies and companies for finding bachelor and master assignments for its members. This happens in accordance with the mobility centre of the study.
For master students, the study association organizes cases at certain companies. During these cases, a group of students will work parts of the day at a posed assignment by the company. For these companies, this is a very interesting way of looking at what IDE-students of Twente University can do and for students it is a good way of gaining experience in working for a company. Among students, this also promotes the feeling of becoming a designer.
S.G. Daedalus has an own association room, the StudIO, where students of Industrial Design Engineering can enhance the contact between different years in the Bachelor- and Masterphase of IDE. Furthermore there can be found professionally literature to read, and it is possible to sign up for activities. The StudIO is the working space for the board and the committees, but above all the StudIO is a place for the students to escape the hectic of their busy student life, where they can relax with a hot cup of coffee or tea, in between colleges.
