Security certificates
You have probably seen this in a move or television series before: people use a secure telephone connection to prevent someone from tapping the phone call.
In our telephone example people often ask "is this a safe line?", but you normally don't have to do this for an internet connection. Your browser checks this for you, using so called security certificates. Of course your browser also has to know if the certificate is real.
To do so your browser has a list of internationally acknowledged certificates. The UT certificate is provided by SURFnet. Unfortunately SURFnet is not one of these acknowledged certificate providers. Because of this the certificate has to be installed manually on your computer. If you receive an error messages when logging on to an UT web application this means that the certificate is not installed yet. You are able to accept the certificate temporarily. You still make use of a secure connection when doing so. Also you are able to check the validity of the certificate yourself in order to make sure you connect to the right server.
More information on certificates, how to install them, and how to check the authenticity you can find in the manual below. If you have questions about the installation of a certificate on your PC you can of course contact the ICTS servicedesk.
