EDUROAM IS THE UNIVERSITY OF TWENTE'S WIRELESS NETWORK.
Logging in to eduroam means that, as well as being able to use the wireless networks on the University of Twente campus, you can also use the networks of numerous other universities and colleges in the Netherlands, Europe and elsewhere in the world. Students and staff who have a utwente account are able to use the eduroam network. Third party and temporary accounts only work on the University of Twente campus
Guests and third parties can also use the unsecured wireless UTGUEST network.
EDUROAM EXPLAINED
WHO MAY USE THE EDUROAM NETWORK?
Eduroam, the wireless network of the UT, is accessible by everyone who holds a UT ICT account (m<employee number>@utwente.nl of s<student number>@utwente.nl).
Students from other universities or establishments that participate in eduroam can also use the wireless network facilities at the University of Twente. The username is always followed by @institution (e.g. 123456@saxion.nl for Saxion and name@itc.nl for ITC). Vice versa, the UT ICT account also provides access to eduroam at sites elsewhere in the Netherlands and abroad (always with @utwente.nl); see information regarding this on the eduroam website. Also on this website is a list of the sites where eduroam is available.
WHERE CAN YOU USE THE EDUROAM NETWORK?
There is wireless coverage in the education buildings, the Campus-based student accommodation, a large area of the UT site.
WHAT HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE DO YOU NEED TO BE ABLE TO USE EDUROAM?
To be able to use eduroam at the UT, you need a laptop or smartphone which has a Wi-Fi network card, preferably a multichannel IEEE 802.11n (2.4 GHz and 5GHZ). If necessary, ask the Notebook Service Centre for information.
The most advanced 802.11n access points are available at the Noordhorst, Carré, Ravelijn and the Waaier. In the other buildings, this is a combination of 802.11g and 802.11a.
In terms of the security of eduroam at the UT, WPA2 Enterprise and AES have been selected; these ensure strong authentication and encryption and they also enable the higher speeds of the IEEE 802.11n network.
Formal support is currently only available for Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7; for other operating systems such as Linux and Mac OS and different types of smartphones, you can go to the SNT. Manuals are available through the links at the bottom of this page.
GUEST USE
Guest use of the wireless network through the UTGUEST network is possible for temporary users and is an unsecured network with limited capacity. To log on is based on a web authorisation with an ICT account or an temporary account. A web browser is necessary.
Therefore, if you are a student or staff member, use the eduroam network.
With an ICT account, a temporary account can be requested using the TRA web application. For more information, click on the link at the bottom of this page.
