Detailed proposal of the Tenure Track Memorandum Career perspective for excellent young Academic Staff
As you are aware the Executive Board (EB) has chosen as theme for its staff policy the development of staff, among other things. Supervisors are crucial for this development. It is up to supervisors to pay special attention to talent among other things, because attracting, developing and retaining talent is of strategic importance to the UT. Talent, and managing talent, is the future of our organisation and attracting and retaining talent will increase the quality of the UT. The EB wishes to invest more in talent.
The Tenure Track Memorandum of the EB explores the possibility of attracting potential talents via the instrument of tenure track, by offering hem a career perspective (permanent employment = tenure and career development opportunities). The memorandum at hand serves as a more detailed proposal with the purpose of creating a uniform procedure for faculties with a minimum of central regulations. Faculties are given the opportunity to make their own choices.
The starting point is to give (budding) excellently performing young academics, the talents, the prospect of permanent employment in a UHD-ranked (senior university lecturer) position, via a 6-year temporary appointment and without any formative limitations. Depending on the intention of the faculty in question, subsequently an appointment as a professor may be possible in the future. In the latter case, new agreements will be made in advance and the criteria are laid down in writing. It is the dean’s responsibility to coach these UHDs in order for them to be able to fully develop themselves up to this level.
In addition, the instrument of tenure track offers the possibility to attract top academics from groups having a disadvantaged position on the labour market, such as women, immigrants in the Netherlands and foreigners. The instrument can also be used in enhancing the research and education strategy of a faculty.
