Language policy and -facilities at the UT

uilWorking at the University of Twente means increasingly working in an international environment. The international character of science and the growing number of foreign students, research assistants, and employees have resulted in a more internationally-oriented physical environment for UT employees. In this context it is a matter of course to use English alongside Dutch as the UT's main languages, whether for education or other matters.

Since everyone does not necessarily communicate fluently in English, a language policy has been adopted in which necessary requirements and facilities are established. It is now important to implement this policy. The units (faculties, institutes, service departments) are responsible for this implementation: you may be contacted about this soon by your executive. With this letter we would like to inform you in advance about the UT language policy and facilities offered to you by the UT.

The following English language requirements have been adopted by the executive board:

·

Employees with a teaching position must achieve an 7.5 score on the internationally recognized IELTS test (see www.ielts.org and www.bltc.nl);

·

Key figures in education and service departments (such as study advisors, faculty administration employees, communication and personnel advisors, etc.) must achieve an IELTS score of 7.5.

·

The UT will utilise British English in its written correspondence, external advertising (such as websites and brochures), and internal correspondence with students and staff.

The TaalCoördinatiePunt (Language Coordination Point) offers support in the form of assessments, language courses, advice and self-study facilities for studying a language. The TaalCoördinatiePunt offers, for example, English courses attuned to the various target groups within the UT: students, support staff, PhD students and academic staff.
